Is it possible to establish a direct connection from Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel (PAX) to a TM1 server in order to explore the TM1 cubes, or do I need Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW) installed first in order to use PAX with it?
This site claims that

Hello,
i checked the Link you posted, there is "Authentification over Cognos Security" and its deprecated in v 2.0.9, so is there no way to use the Cognos Security with PAX?
Its just an additional question cause i want to create a list what changes we would need to do if we want to upgrade to PAW and PAX.
Thanks!

If you follow the link you speak of it seems to relate specifically to the Ops Console (which is deprecated in v2.0.9).
I think that if IBM had decided to deprecate CAM security for TM1 there would be significant push back to say the least. It's a pretty significant component.
Granted the link to the document is worded in an inaccurate way, making no mention of the Ops Console.
I've not reviewed the whole page but some of the references may be cloud specific, i.e. the reference about using IBMid (which I don't think is true for the cloud anymore either).
This one is amusing.
Install TM1 Server
Some features of IBM Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel require the use of TM1® Server. Install TM1 Server to ensure that you are getting the best experience with Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel.
It's true you need a TM1 DB to get anything out of PAfE....so I guess it is a prerequisite....

Hi Steve!
Thanks for your answer, the doc is a lil bit weird.
The Requirement of the TM1 Server is funny

seems logical
At the moment we use Cognos Analytics and PA 2.0.9, our CAM Security is working normally, if someone is interested in this.
I have no clue about PAW, is it using a totally other auth system? is there no "SSO" or "CAM" in PAW? (Just to complete this)
Thanks!
