Display Alias by Default

Post by FarmboyEsq »

Hi,

I really do look for answers before bothering folks on a list like this. I'm sorry to say I'm stuck again. I can see the alias name when I view my dimension in the dimension editor, (if I use the Alias toolbar to display them, or even though I click through the Edit/Select Alias... pick my alias and say OK.)

But how do I cause that dimension name to appear by default whenever I see that dimension in a cube or elsewhere?

The first cube I built, shows the dimension element numeric value and not the nifty alias name.

Thank you for any advice. A reference to a section in a manual or book would be fine also.

Depending on the context from which you open the subset editor, you'll be opening a particular subset of the dimension. This subset contains information such as which, if any, aliases are turned on. If you just double click on the dimension name in server explorer, you'll open the default subset. As an admin, you can switch on your alias and then re-save the default subset. The alias should be active when you next open it.

While this should give you sort of what you want, it won't permanently turn the alias on. If you open the subset editor via the cube viewer, you'll open the active subset in the view in which the alias may be off. It may be worth going through any saved cube views you may have and turning aliases on if they aren't. Of course, it will still be possible for a user to switch them off again in the subset editor.

Here's what I did and it looks like it works. Opened the cube, from cube, opened the dimension, clicked on the option that says "Use alias" and saved cube view. Next time I opened it, it had alias for the dimension in question.

If you want alias to be the default one used across all cubes, you could create a default subset in the dimension and then use this subset for all the default cube views you create. This will work only if the cube has cube views.

Thank you !

Saving the default subset with the appropriate display seems to have solved my problem. :D

One thing in your screen shot which I have noticed that your element name is 1. (with the dot)

In your case the best practice is to create the element names without the dot so that your element is 1 not 1.
Cheers!
