Ver 8.3 was released in Oct 2003, rather old now! Some bits haven't changed much conceptually (though they may look different) but there is lots of new stuff in recent versions.
If you have the software install CD it should have all the documentation anyway.

It's possible that the poster does not in fact have the TM1 software and is trying to write an extraction process against an existing TM1 instance for a client, but since he's been so assiduous in following the RFA Guidelines and providing all of the necessary details to put the question in context (even going to the extent of using the subject line "TM1 8.3 version" this time instead of just "Cognos TM1") there is no way, short of advanced psychic ability to know whether this is the case. I'm sure that since he has consulted the FAQ as per the RFA Guidelines he'll have noted that the documentation downloads start at version 9.0, though I'm surprised that he didn't mention having done so.
As you say, the concepts are similar so short of having the actual 8.3 documentation downloading the 9.0 documentation via the FAQ link would seem a reasonable place to start.
