IBM Cognos TM1 10.1 Developer

Just looking at the sample question on IBM website...one of the question looks odd...According to the website the correct answer is 1A...I thought is should have been 1C ? Have i missed something
because the child elements (Frog & Salamander) should be a numeric element parented to a consolidated element ? Did i miss an elephant standing next to me ?

Edit: Before anyone thinks that Declan and I have lost our minds, it may be noted from a comparison between the quoted block above and the current question that the OP has edited the latter to make it read quite differently from the originally posted one. It is in circumstances such as these that I'm quite glad that we both quoted the original question in line.

Not wishing to be nasty, but why on earth would you assume it to be a string element? The element type depends on the data that is stores/calculates. So the name Amphibians may be a string, but it's dollars to donuts that Frog and Salamander will contain numeric data and that Amphibians will be consolidating that data. (Remember that the question says that you want the children to "roll up" to the parent; that's a slightly ambiguous expression since string children can still "roll up" to a parent (in the Subset Editor sense) though what I think is meant here is "aggregate"... and strings don't aggregate (by consolidation, anyway), only numbers do.) So yes, I would expect it to be a C type element.

In true Iboglix style, however, the answer is sloppy since a consolidation (indeed any element) does not have any intrinsic weight; its weight only exists relative to its parent, and a single element can have different weights for different parents.

The children of Amphibians need to have a weighting of 1. Amphibians itself probably has a weighting of 1 relative to at least one of its parents, if it has any. But the consolidation itself, like all elements, has no intrinsic weighting that means anything.

(Also the question asks for the "weighting and element type (for) each element", then goes on to ask about only one. That's unless there were subsequent questions based on the scenario, but there's still the issue of the weighting response for Amphibians being meaningless.)

Why do you think they should be string elements?

Keep in mind that string elements are only relevant when part of the last dimension in the cube (usually a measures dimension.) And irrespective of that, I can't see any part of the question that refers to storing of string information.

Appreciate the feedback...i wasn't questioning abt the 'Amphibian' parent type but the children itself....sorry i meant numeric..corrected by initial blog...
