Very newbie question: Cannot get architect functionality

Hi everyone,

I recently began learning TM1 10.1 through some self-study of the Great Outdoors samples. Everyone worked very well for a few weeks, until one day after a reboot of my laptop, the Great Outdoors server suddenly stopped appearing in Architect. I checked the configuration settings, and the Great Outdoors server, TM1 admin server, and Local Configuration are all started. I am not the most experienced computer user, so I don't really know how to troubleshoot any further beyond making sure all services are started in the Control Panel. Could this be an issue with the ports?

Best,

If someone could just post a few suggestions for things to try.... I've exhausted the options that I know of and Google has not been an enormous help.

If all of that information is correct (bearing in mind that we can't see your server and don't know what your tm1p.ini file looks like), there is no obvious reason for the problem. It does beg the question of whether you are getting ANY servers showing in Architect, though, and if so whether the port numbers of those servers (in the tm1s.cfg file of the server) is the same as that of the Great Outdoors sample server.

No servers are showing up in Architect, but keep in mind that I have only been working with the Great Outdoor planning samples so far. I'm not sure how it could be a port conflict if I never manually changed anything. Quite literally: it was working, I went home from work, and the next day it did not work. I have just been working in a local environment with the planning samples, no connection to the outside whatsoever. Is there any other information I can check or provide that might help me narrow down my troubleshooting options? I am genuinely sorry that I can't give greater detail!

Perhaps this is significant: While the Local Configuration and the GO Server are both started, I can't stop them or restart them...

By "Local configuration" I presume that you mean a Local server.

If:
(a) You have your Local Server Data directory (in File => Options of Server Explorer) pointing to the GO server's data directory; and
(b) You have Connect To Local Server on Startup; and
(c) You have a Windows Service (the Go server itself) that is set up to use the same data directory, then
It's entirely possible that you have your Local server and the Go Server service contesting for ownership of the same data files and log files.

Make sure that your data directory option is pointing to a directory OTHER than the Go server's one, and that you are not starting the local server automatically.

Okay. I ensured that Server Explorer wasn't pointing to the GO_New_Stores directory. I pointed it to a different directory (admittedly random; didn't know which one to put. If there is a specific one that I need let me know) instead. It was indeed pointing to the GO_New_Stores files as you predicted. I also unchecked the start local server automatically box. Still cannot stop the TM1 Admin Server or GO server, and still nothing showing up in Architect... :/

Thanks again for your help anyway. If you have anything further to suggest, please let me know. I'm learning a lot!

Hang on, you didn't say anything about not being able to stop the Admin Server before; you said that you couldn't stop the "Local configuration" and the Go Server.

When you go to Computer => Manage => Services (which is where you should be doing the stop from), what is the exact error message that you're getting?

When you go to Computer => Manage => Event Viewer => Windows Logs, are there any entries in the various logs about the services?

(In this I'm assuming that you are running on Windows 7 or equivalent; you haven't specified the operating system version that you're using.

Apologies for not being more clear! Yes, Windows 7.

Error message when I attempt to stop the Admin Server from services: "Error 1061:The service cannot accept control messages at this time." The only thing I can think to do is to kill the service in task manager but I thought it better to ask for advice first.

The only logs I can find that have anything to do with TM1 are under Administrative Events. There are 2-3 Errors every two minutes that my computer has been in use, with an event ID of 0. The source is tm1sdx64.

I'm almost thinking a clean re-install is what I need but I would really prefer not to if at all possible as it will put me behind (won't be able to re-access the files until Monday).

The Great Outdoors sample TM1 server regularly fails to start after a reboot of my VM - might be the same issue you're experiencing. In my case it seems the transaction logfile somehow gets corrupted.

Try to delete the tm1s.log file (on my VM it's in C:\Program Files\ibm\cognos\tm1_64\webcontent\samples\datasources\cubes\amdtool\greatoutdoors\logfiles) and then start the greatoutdoors server.

Just want to clarify - The Great Outdoors server has no problem starting in the IBM Cognos Configuration window. My problem is that after it is started, it doesn't appear in server explorer, making me unable to access dimension/cubes/TI processes/etc. And, it is unable to be stopped.

In that case, would you still suggest I delete the log file?

Perhaps not the same issue then - sorry if I put you on the wrong track.

Sometimes a TM1 server appears to start as expected but fails later in the process.

What are the last entries in the tm1server.log message file after start up?
Mine say:
FATAL ... TM1.Transaction TM1TransactionLog::ProcessTransactionLog: Bad transaction log record, line number 1.
FATAL ... TM1.Server Server terminated

You should see "... TM1 Server is ready" if all is OK. In that case it's not the same issue and deleting the transaction log file probably won't help.

The path you indicated leads to an empty folder named sandbox logs. I've been clicking around since you posted the path originally looking for it but I can't seem to find that file. Everything is started up too.

I feel very, very dumb.

Is the IPAddress specified in the config file? Do you connect to a DHCP server? Did the lease on your IPAddress expire and you get a new one?

No, nothing with the IP Addresses have changed. Yes to DHCP server. IP Addresses all match.

Shosty, I should be the one feeling dumb as I put you on a wild goose chase by not reading you're question properly.

You mentioned GO_New_Stores as well (which is a different server as the greatoutdoors one), its logfiles should be here: C:\Program Files\ibm\cognos\tm1_64\samples\tm1\GO_New_Stores\logfiles

If everything is up and running and the admin host in the Options dialog matches the one in the tm1s.cfg file of the server then you should see it in Architect.

Again my apologies for leading you down the wrong path.

Definitely going to add you as a "foe" for this. Just kidding. I actually think you're on to something.
