Deleting Obsolete User folders from the data directory

We have a lot of old user folders in our TM1 data directory. They contain private subsets and private cube views.
As these users are now obsolete, and have been removed as active users, can we simply delete their folder from this data directory?
Do we need to stop the TM1 service, delete the folders and restart?
Or can we just delete the folders when the service is running as these users are no longer active?
