TM1 Forum

We're planning to implement the latest version of TM1 in the near future, and are currently working on a plan to do so. Just wondering if anyone knows of any common risks involved with implementing TM1 for the first time that we should be watching for. If anyone has any tips or ideas for preparing for TM1, that would be great to hear too.

The biggest risk is thinking it's going to be easy and you can handle it with in-house talent. Go out and hire an experienced consultant(s). Once you learn the ropes you can scale back the outside assistance but trying to go it alone is a recipe for frustration.

Tomok is right, to attempt the conversion of TM1 without an experienced person on hand is likely a mistake. we had lots of Cognos Planning experience and after about a year of working with TM1 we found found that you are doing things differently, like using "module" processes (Processes that you create once that accept parameters for a task you do over and over again), writing more advanced TI code in the tabs vs using the wizard, if you use BI youll find your models all have reporting cubes so that they are easier to work with in Report Studio, you will learn to use attributes more so than you did before, many of your rules will become more dynamic and youll learn to be more careful with feeders, naming conventions will become more solidified, etc.

Many of these items are things an experienced consultant will bring to the table right away and you will be able to learn as well.

It is important to know the behaviour of TM1 as well. Some you may find it on the Tm1 developer documentation from IBM. Some you will only find out after working on the software for a while. Small things like the sequence of the dimension plays an important part in determining the cube performance. It wouldn't matter much if the cube is small and simple. But of course admin has the option to re arrange the dimension after that to improve on the performance. But there are other factor to consider before rearranging the dimension eg having sufficient memory to make sure that this can be done.
