Access TM1 Cubes from a other MDX Client Tool

Post by HLEBOEUF »

What would we need to do/install/configure in order to access our TM1 server (9.5) from a non Cognos MDX client.

Is there a way ?

It depends what your "non-Cognos MDX client" is! If it is Cubeware, Arcplan, DeltaMaster, PolyVista or Executive Viewer for example then it is pretty much out of the box connectivity. (I heard also that MicroStrategy has a very good TM1 connector but I have never seen it.)

There may be other tools with similar OOTB type native client or better connectivity to TM1 and there may be others with a more roll your own approach which might require you to write a lot of bespoke MDX. Unless you tell us what your tool is then I don't think you are going to get much more information.

I'll be honest, we don't know the client yet.
We are reshaping our complete BI environment (currently all SSAS cubes), but our planning and forecasting and financial reporting will remain in TM1.
So one of the options would be BO 4.0 (SAP), but i can't find lectures on a interface, but they claim to be able to connect MDX servers, as TM1 speaks MDX, tehrefore my question.

Also it would be usefull (for some small things) that we can access our cubes from SSRS (SqlServer Reporting Services).
SSRS can access SSAS cubes by a OLE driver, so i hoped that there would exists a driver ...

Maybe wishfull thinking ...

Unless you are truly talented in creating your own linkages and what not between all these different tools, you are just asking for a lot of heartache to use anything other than Cognos. Since you are reshaping your entire BI environment it should be worth a look. If your user base is not too large (under 100 users) Cognos Express may be a really good option as it gives you everything under the same hood. If not, then Cognos 10 for the BI. Not pumping Cognos here because I think it's great, just that I know the linkage between TM1 and Cognos 10 is "pretty" good and you'll be able to find support when you run into problems. Any other tool and you are going to be pretty much on your own when it doesn't work.

As lotsaram pointed out there are a number of products that directly connect through the TM1 API. Tools like Cubeware Cockpit and Arcplan Enterprise have the advantage that they can connect to various (types of) databases. For access from other MDX based clients you need to make sure that the TM1 ODBO provider has been installed.
Please note that the MDX interface comes in many flavours, so a successful connection with the client of choice is not guaranteed (a few years back I connected to TM1 from SAS Enterprise Guide - initially this seemed to work, but random crashes on both server and client side after some selections proved that this was not really working).

I wouldn't take for granted what SAP-(BO) pretends to deliver. BO had an interface to connect to AS2000 cubes in the past but it couldn't even read calculated members....
As for Microsoft I liked the OLE interface between SSAS and SSRS very much because it is so transparent. This may be working for you but TM1 doesn't include the full MDX functionality.

Anyway, I wouldn't expect that companies like SAP and MS are putting much effort in developing and TESTING interfaces to TM1. It will be you who has to test it.
