Dimension editing problems
Hi,
Has anyone met such kind of problems when trying to create/edit a hierarchy in Dimension Editor?
Step-by-step actions:
1st: I created a simple test dimention (5 leaf level elements & 1 future calc element).
2d: then I created a simple hierarchy (using "cut" & "paste as child") & saved the changes
3d: I moved one of the leaf elements avay from the hierarchy & put it as a standalone leaf element (by drag-n-drop). I saved changes & closed Dimention Editor.
4th: I re-opened Dimention Editor & saw that the leaf elements were doubled (!). For, as I know, it's impossible to enter two identical elements in the same dimention.
Is there any solution?

Re: Dimension editing problems
How did you remove them? Did you right click on the element and select delete element from consolidation? I've found that this is the only way to do it without issue,
Jim.

Re: Dimension editing problems
What exactly is wrong with the screenshot? It shows you with 7 leaf elements and 1 consolidation element. 4 of the leaf elements are also children of Total1. Where is this doubling you are referring to?

Re: Dimension editing problems
Click on the All button then on the Hierarchy Sort button.
Don't forget that TM1 can have many hierarchies in one dimension, so there is no problem with your screenshot. You are correct that you can only have one element called '1' but that same element can be included in many hierarchies, so can appear in the dimension editor multiple times. This is not a problem, and you are not storing multiple copies of data.

Re: Dimension editing problems
To tomok:
I'll try to give more details....
step1 I've created 5 leaf elements, named: "1,2,3,4,5"
step2 & 1 consolidation element, named: "Total1" (please, ignore the "Total2"&"Total3" on the screenshot)
step3 I've created a hierarchy: ""Total1" should be a parent for elements 1,2,3,4,5" (to do that, I've cut the elements named 1,2,3,4,5 & pasted them as a child elements for the element "Total1").
step 4 I saved the changes.
Then, for example, I've changed my mind & decided that "Total1" should be the parent element only for the elements named 2,3,4,5 but not for the element named "1". So, I clicked it with the left mouse button & draged it down, so that it won't be a part of the hierarchy...
I saved the changes again.
When I re-opened the dimention in the Dimention Editor I saw a strange picture: there appeared 4 copies of the other elements 2,3,4,5 below the hierarchy (!).
I've got two elements named "2", two elements named "3" etc... all these elements exist in the same dimention!
And I know, that the existance of 2 identical elements in the same dimention is forbidden (you may try to test it & to enter a new element & give him the same name that already exists in your dimention. You'd receive an error).
This example I've discribed is a simplified discription of the situation I've received when working with the large & complex dimentions (over 300 elements & with uneven hierarchy). The more large & complex dimention you have, the more difficult it is to find & fix such problems...
To jim wood:
Yes, perhaps, but let's imagine that I need this element named "1" in other part of the dimention. If I delete it, I'll have to add it once more then.
And when I add a leaf element using "input a child element" I receive problems as well (like: the newly added leaf element drops out from the hierarchy where I've put it. Or the new element moves down the hierarchy & becomes the last one in the list for I've put it in the beginnig or in the middle of a list ....)
I think that when it comes to manual editing, TM1 has a lot of defects that were not resolved by the IBM before the product release...
So, I'd like to find out whether someone has got the same problems that I do and if there exists any way to avoid them?

Re: Dimension editing problems
To Andy Key:
I may have several hierarchies in the same dimension. But I don't need more then 1 hierarchy in most cases
... So, when talking about the real dimentions, not a test ones, I have to put up with the situation, when I get 300 + 300= 600 elements(in my case, I've got over 300 elements in excel worksheet), when working with TM1?
And the most uncomfortable thing is that the Dimention Editor sometimes puts such "copies" in the middle of a list, breaking the hierarchy that was created by the user...

Re: Dimension editing problems
If you want to have precise control over the order of elements as they appear in hierarchies and the dimension is small (300 elements is pretty small) then you would be better off using a dimension worksheet or "XDI" to build your dimension. I think you can still find references to XDIs in the developer guide and you are sure to find some relevant discussions on this forum.Ginger wrote:To Andy Key:

Re: Dimension editing problems
That's why (if you read it properly) I said choose delete element from the consolidation. If you don't know what that means let me know.Ginger wrote: To jim wood:

Re: Dimension editing problems
No, you DO NOT have two elements named "2", two elements named "3", etc. If you don't believe me, check with the Professor (sorry, couldn't help myself there Ginger) The problem is that you don't understand the graphical presentation that is being shown to you by the dimension editor. Going back to your original screenshot here is what the dimension editor screen is telling us. The first element in the dimension is Total1. It is defined as a consolidation node (the summation icon tells me that) whose children are 2,3,4 and 5. The second element in the dimension is 1, which is defined as a leaf (the N next to it tells me that), the third element is a leaf named 2, then a leaf named 4, a leaf name 5, a leaf named Total2 and then a leaf named Total3. Elements 2 thru 5 ARE NOT IN THE DIMENSION TWICE!!!!! You see them in the screen twice because this is how the TM1 programmers have chosen to display dimension organization. Get used to it.Ginger wrote:When I re-opened the dimention in the Dimention Editor I saw a strange picture: there appeared 4 copies of the other elements 2,3,4,5 below the hierarchy (!).

Like lotasram mentioned, if you don't like the order of elements in a dimension, your best option is going to be to use a dimension worksheet or XDI, because you can easily control the order without resorting to drag and dropping.

Re: Dimension editing problems
Right click on dimension and select 'Set Elements Order'
Under 'Select one of the sort orders' section select "Automatic"
Under the section 'Automatic Sort by" select "Hierarchy". Click on 'OK'
Try to reopen and see if this fixes your issue.

Ashwin
