Deleting Cubes

Hi

I am weighing below options for deleting couple of dense cubes in our model (size around 10GB)

1. Delete .cub files from data directory and recycle the service
2. From front end, Tm1 perspective, delete the cubes using 'Delete Cube' option

1st one sounds a better option to me. But, wanted to get opinion from experienced users.

I would go with the second option and Delete the cube within the Server Explorer. By doing this it will also delete the other files from the data directory which are related to the cube.

CAUTION: To be on safer side, make sure to take a backup before you delete any cube. This will help in case you want something back from the deleted cube

I would go with option 1 if the cube is any kind of size or you have added / deleted views. I have seen far to many server crashes in my time when trying to delete in server explorer. In fact I had that exact problem just the other day, so I can report that trying to delete a cube from within server explorer can cause 9.5.2 to crash as well,

I think option 2 is the preferred one - as this will also automatically delete all objects related to the cube, like rules sheet and public/private views... but having said this, I have the same experience as Jim with system instability when deleting very big cubes and even if deleting the cube goes smoothly, the system could be locked for some time while performing the operation - a system stop, delete .cub file and related rule/view files could be the quicker option.

I have not experienced crashes when deleting cubes, but am curious about what situations you have. Were there rules from other cubes referencing the deleted cube when the delete was performed?

I didn't have a rules between cubes. I think I have mainly seen it when you have deleted a view then created another with same name. I'm not 100% certain about that so I'll need to look in to it further.

I agree with Jim. Last evening I tried to delete a large cube, around 8GB, from server explorer and it was kind of taking forever to delete the cube. Also, I could not access any other servers during that time. After couple of hrs I had to kill the thread.
I think I will go with deleting files from data directory option. Of course, I will have to delete all the cube related files manually , but I hope it will be quicker; plus it wont prevent me accessing other instances on the server at the same time.

Very interesting....some of our clients have some very large cubes (80GB+). I will keep that in mind if they ever have to delete them.
