Cannot use Roll Up for dimensions with Element Security

Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone has any idea on how i can still have the element security in dimension but still be able to use the roll up functions.
1. I have a Department dimension and user has specific access to certain department. (used element security to define user access)
2. In viewing the cube, I would like to use the Roll up function to create sub-totals for selected department which I have access.
3. When I click the roll up button, TM1 removes the list of the department i selected from the subset editor. So I think it is because of the element security defined.
Appreciate if anyone can give suggestion or alternative on how I can manage both security and roll up feature.
Thanks,
Ana

I doubt it has anything to do with security; it's normal behaviour. When you click on the [Rollup] button the elements that you have selected will vanish and be replaced by a rollup consolidation named something like
}ROLLUP_ELEM_001. That will have a [+] sign next to it indicating that you can click to expand it into the individual elements.
I think that there may be a slight bug in 9.5.1, though it doesn't affect what I've described above. If you re-enter the Subset Editor, you can click on the [+] to expand the rollup into the individual elements
but it refuses to show the element aliases. It's fine if you click on the [+] next to the roll-up in Cube Viewer, it's only Subset Editor that's affected. (Tested with Plan_Report in Planning Sample, "LY 2004 Actuals" view, plan_business_unit dimension.) Can anyone else confirm this? I rarely use roll-ups so I don't know how long this potential bug might have been around for.

Thanks for your reply. I also think it is a bug in 9.5 but not confirmed, it is contradicting with what i understand about roll up function.

The
alias issue appears to be a bug. Having the selected elements vanish to be replaced by a single "}ROLLUP_ELEM_xxx" consolidation is expected behaviour. It's been that way as long as I can recall, and certainly performs that way in 9.0 SP3 as well.

Hello,
I am bit confuse now, not sure of what can be my alternative to both get the funtionalities I need.
I need to define the }element security to limit my user access to certain deparments but also need the }roll up feature for them to easily create/have aggregates during analysis.
Any suggestion/ work around that I can try out?

I'm not sure where the confusion is coming from; surely they're only going to need to do a roll-up to get an aggregate of the departments that they have access to?

Hi Alan,
Really appreciate your reply.
True that they can only get aggregates to department they have access to, the issue now is users can not use the Roll Up function (button from subset editor) to create there own aggregates. This issue I only encounter to dimensions where I defined element security, the rest of dimensions are perfectly working.
If I have access to 20 departments and I only want to view 5 and aggregate the 5 departments, I will just use the Roll Up feature since it is not a permanent and regular aggregation. But what I'm experiencing now is when I choose to make the temporary aggregates using the Roll Up button, all the elements I previously select disappears and no }Roll_up_xxx either.

That
is odd. I just re-tested on 9.5.1 on a non-admin login using a secured dimension (different environment to last time), and found that for me, it still works as expected. (That is, except for the alias issue; certainly the Rollup element still appears.)
I recall that there is (or was) a server config parameter which allowed rollup functionality to be disabled which I can't seem to find at the moment, though if I recall correctly it disabled the button, not just the functionality. Might be an idea to post your .cfg file anyway in case there's something that sticks out.

Oh, of course, I forgot how good at being consistent in nomenclature and cross-referencing Applix was. The parameter is UserDefinedCalculations, which is True by default; you'd have to set it to False to disable it.
However even when you do so it doesn't cause the symptom that you describe; the button is enabled but clicking on it just launches a message box telling you that user defined calculations are not enabled.

No, I just can't replicate this in 9.5.1, no way, no how. If you can replicate it consistently, I think it's probably time to raise a service request with IBM. I just can't find any settings or combination of settings or security settings that will replicate it in my test environments. Yes, the elements go away as I'd expect, but there's definitely a }Rollup element left behind.

Hi,
the issue is caused by a bug which came along with one of the later 9.5.1 Hotfixes (I think #8).
We have raised this as an issue and were told this will be solved with HF10.
TM1 9.5.1 HF10 (Ver. 9.5.10010.10511) is available since Nov 22, officially released on Dec9, 2010.
I did some short tests and it seems to work fine, even with having the client still using HF9.
Please ask your local support for the files or download from IBM ftp server if possible.
Regards
Gabor
