Hi all,
I've encountered the following error when I login to my TM1 web: -
Error occurred while converting the MS Excel workbook into XML format: Object reference not set to an insance of an object.::Internal Error:The file could not be opened.

I have tried to change the setting in Component Services - MS Excel Application. And, the problem still persists.

I have encountered this error so many times. There could be a lot of reasons behind it. Is this the problem with all the spreadsheets or is that just one sheet which is causing the problem?

Your spreadsheets could have some Object which TM1Web is having difficulty in displaying.

Also have you tried restarting the TM1 Excel windows service?

It applied to all my excel file. And, I've reboot the PC for few times and the problem still exist.

I did get this error once and as I said before there could be so many things which could cause this problem.

1)In Excel, create a new workbook. Do not connect to TM1. Type something in only 1 cell. Save this files as Excel 2003 format (*.XLS). Upload it to Applications in TM1. Now try to open it in TM1web.
Make sure your excel files do not contain objects which are not supported in TM1Web e.g combo boxes etc.
2) Go to C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\TM1WebEx\ExcelSheet and check if any *.XLS and *.XML files exists.
3) check and confirm that the TM1 Excel Service is configured to run under an account that is also an administrator on that local machine?
4) Exclude the following folders from your Virus scan:
c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\TM1Web
c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\TM1WebEx
5) Delete all files in the ExcelSheet and UserTempDir folders (these are temp files) and then restart your TM1ExcelService and IIS.
6) Check the tm1excelservice.log file. There might be some information in that file.
7) If you are on 64-bit then make sure you add LockPagesInMemory=T set in your tm1s.cfg file. Restart the TM1 services after you change this.

For the benefits of others... I had the following error message "an error occured while converting the MS Excel workbook into XML format : object reference not set to an instance of an object"... I had this error with some files but NOT ALL … I am using TM1 V9.5.1 with Excel 2003 SP3...
After investigation on the workbook I realised the issue was caused by some conditional formatting. Funny enough I am using conditional formatting on TM1Web with other workbooks without any problems... For this particular workbook I did not want conditional formatting anyway, this was only copied unintentionally… so I just removed the conditional formatting and it solved the problem.

You should also check your Webserver's TM1Web log file
typicaly located in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\TM1Web\log\


The messages are sometimes cryptic but can also give you valuable clues on what is wrong.

yeap - me also, conditional formatting with background fills etc works, conditional formatting number format e.g. number to % of total gives me that error..
