9.1 TI Processing Time

What determines how many records get pulled from an Oracle table at a time when running sql within TI? Example, when we pull our GL information it pulls around 10,000 records a time/sec but when we pull sales by type table it pulls around 500 records a time/sec with this script running faster within sql than first. Thanks.
