TM1 9.4 FP2 - Servers

Hi All,
What is everyone experience with tm1 sitting on servers and getting the server restarted say once a week?
Is this general practice?
Reason for the question is that we currently restart our TM1 instance every night, but the server does not get restarted unless something is upgraded or software is patched. we are running a Windows 2003 server. We have had some issues but noticed that when the windows server was restarted things ran so much better for a period of time anyway!
Our IT guys are pushing back saying that they don't reguarly reboot servers. We are running on a VM box.
What are your thoughts / suggestions?
regards,
vaneagle

Further to the above;
Can TM1 run on Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5.3
Also is there any known issues with “performance†such as suspected memory leak issues with TM1?

A regular restart of the TM1 instance was a good work around in 32 bit days to avoid the server falling over 2GB, but was a work around and not really an ideal situation. In 64 bit days restarts should really only be for things like flushing feeders or an occasional cleanout, perhaps monthly.
Restarting the server box should never be required from TM1's point of view, except perhaps after an uninstall and reinstall, and even that's just to be on the safe side rather than an necessity.
Not sure about Red Hat.
Martin

Thanks for that Martin.
Reason i am asking is that over time, Tm1 slows down. We are not sure why. We restart our Tm1 instance daily. The server it sits on has not been restarted for around a month so we are looking to see if others have had a similar type of issue with TM1 slowing down over time.

I'm not sure I agree with Martin. Maybe no server restart is ever required for TM1 to
function but to
function optimally is another matter. Depending on what the server is running the OS can certainly benefit from a periodic restart which will enable all applications to run faster. How regular a periodic restart should be really depends on what the server is doing. If you find that TM1 runs better if the physical server is rebooted once a month or once a week then better to do it! (although I can't imagine that a more frequent restart than once a week would ever be necessary ....)

You are running TM1 on a VM - this could be a bottleneck for the performance. See the following post:

We restart TM1 services (not the physical boxes) daily during busy periods like month-end. Rather than being specifically "time" driven, it is more "usage" driven. Admittedly, this is mostly to avoid the problem of TM1 dropping Aliases (we are on 64-bit 9.1.3) which it seems to do after a lot of use. I understand that particular problem goes away from 9.1.4 on. It is something we've got rather used to doing over our 12 years with TM1. Initially, as Martin says, this was mostly to avoid the innevitable RAM crash. Since upgrading to 64-bit we have the Alias issue. I draw the unscientific and untechnical conclusion that, one way or another, TM1 has tended to become "tired and emotional" after periods of intense use and seems to benefit from a rest and a lie-down. Servers were so quick to bounce on a 32-bit platform that it was a no-brainer cure-all. Of course restarts become a little more intrusive with the model-sizes permitted by 64-bit ..

just a thought, if you restart tm1 instance daily, wouldnt it clear cache? so the next time same slice refresh will take longer...

.. that is perfectly true, but
a) TM1 calc times are not typically problematic
b) during busy times data is being updated at least daily which clears the cache anyway
c) .. it's preferable to the errors that otherwise occur

Or does anybody know another way to restart instance daily?
Thank you in advance

TM1 often refers to a TM1 Service as a TM1 Server (which you are thinking of as an instance.)
The link should be what you want.
