Applix 9.1 Keep Excel Connection 'Alive'

Is there a way in the Excel sheet, behind the scenes every x minutes or so, send a command to keep the connection active without modifying the timeout parameter? We have users who 'feed' off the green light in the spreadsheet. A bug has been raised by support but I will not live that long. Thanks.
