Hi all
I was wondering if there are any sites out there, that are running TM1 Web without having Excel installed on the Web Server.
If so, are you experiencing any loss of functionality?
We are getting conflicting advice reagrding the install of Web.In the TM1 9.4 installation document, under Chapter 1, top of page 14, under the section Enable TM1 Excel Service the following paragraph exists.
“Additionally, if you plan to run TM1 Web you must install Microsoft © Excel 2002 or Excel
2003 on the same machine where the IIS web server is installed. If Excel 2002 or 2003 is not
present on the machine where the IIS web server is installed, the TM1 Web installation displays
a warning message, but allows you to continue the installation.â€
Advice that we have been provided states that "
any TM1 web server for TM1Web must have Excel (2002 or greater) installed on it"
Thanking you all in advance for your guidance

I don't think that's conflicting. I read the install document as saying that "the installation itself won't fall over if you don't have Excel installed", but that's all; it doesn't mean that Web will actually work until you
do install Excel.
In fact I can't see how it could, given that it uses Excel to generate its output.
But if I'm wrong about that, I'd be interested to hear.

Hi,
Based on the following tm1s.cfg parameter I assume it should be possible to run TM1Web without Excel being installed server side:
ExcelWebPublishEnabled - Optional
If ExcelWebPublishEnabled=T, Excel files in TM1 Applications can be published to TM1 Web without using Excel on the Web server. Similarly, Websheets and Cubeviewers can be exported from TM1 Web without using Excel on the Web server.
When Excel is not available on the Web server, Excel files in TM1 Applications must be explicitly published to TM1 Web.
For details about the procedure required to publish Excel files, see the IBM Cognos TM1 Developers Guide.
For details about limitations exporting from TM1 Web without using Excel on the Web server, see the IBM Cognos TM1 Users Guide.
AFAIK Excel is only needed to generate the xml from the Excel file - I think that using the option mentioned the translation takes place client side and the xml is published to the server.

Michael. Thanks for this. If we can find an environment to test this on we will do so.
Whether IT will accept the findings of our testing is another story, and may insist on a reference site where this is actively deployed and functioning without the excel add-in.
Cheers
