Sage Line 50 ODBC

Has anybody had any success with using Sage's Line 50 ODBC drivers to pull data directly into TM1? They are somewhat odd as Line 50 doesn't use an RDBMS - data is stored on the file system, one company per folder. We get 'unable to open connection to database' when creating the TI. Excel (32 bit) works.
I had a client some years ago who pulled the content into SQL server to stage and unify the content, and this may be what we have to go with - but there may be a fix I haven't found. Ideas welcome.
