Rule tracer used to open in seperate windows?

Post by jonathan.d »

Hi All,

Recently made a shift to 9.4, and I may be mistaken but I remember the rule tracer used to open in separate windows every time you right-clicked a cell and chose 'trace rule' in 9.1.

However, now in 9.4 on doing the same you have every new instance of the rule tracer open in the same window.

Makes it impossible to compare... :(

Any suggestions?

Sorry to tell you bud but it's been like that for ages. Certainly in 9.0 and if I remember correctly in 8.1.8 also. Same thing happens when you have the message log box open following a TI error log and try to access the next log - need to reopen the message log manually to get the real error. Happens a few places tbh.

And yes, it's very annoying :(

I don't have an active instance to check on but I thought in 9.1 we had multi-windows in this area. Sounds like a regression bug to me. Can anyone confirm the behaviour in 9.1?
Are you on the very latest 9.4 Jonathan?

In 9.1.4... every time you select "Trace Calculation", it comes up in the same window. Select "Trace Feeders"... same window. Select "Check Feeders"... same window.

Unless there was something unintended in an earlier release of 9.1 (though if there was I don't recall it, and we've been through most of 9.1's releases on our Web server), then with apologies to the late Walter Cronkite: "That's the way it is, this Friday, version 9.1, 2009".

Hmmm, OK I'd swear blind that there was a release where you got multiple windows, maybe I was dreaming...

Thinking about it, you can probably get a second window if you use architect as a secondary app if you're desperate. Not brilliant but doubles your current limitations, even if it is a pain to get to.

I have managed to get seperate windows. I think I opened up the same view but in a new window and then traced the calculation.

Yup, you're right and that must have been what people were remembering. In 9.1.4 (and even in 8.2.12 come to that) you'll get one Tracer window per view. Open multiple views (or the same view multiple times) and you can have a Tracer window for each one. It's just that You just can't get multiple Tracer windows from a single view window.

Mystery solved...
