Hello, dear colleagues!

I know that this topic probably is already discussed somewhere at the forum, but anyway, can you help me to find official character limit in element alias from IBM. We try to prepare TM1 restrictions for client (to prevent wrong naming of elements), and we need to show him official information from IBM. I already found this: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.w ... wg27024713 ,but it is about object naming restrictions. I need exactly limit for element name and alias.

I created an element in a dimension of 500 characters, it was just a*500 and there was no issue, the only difficult part was the size of the cube, it did not stretch far enough, but who would want an element length of 500 characters anyway? But It may be the case that there is no offical character limit in an element or alias.

I did this test as an element, which should be the same for an alias, as an alias is still an element in a control cube.

I went ahead and empirically determined that the alias can't contain more than 5459 characters
But, pretty good for me to determine the characters limit for normally system work. I mean, that process should work with this name, TM1Web should show this name and so on. I'm absolutely agree with you, that usually we don't need name which contain more than, lets say, 200 characters. But I need to respond to client definite number of characters which he can use.

Just curious but have you tested that TM1 utilizes all 5459 characters when comparing aliases e.g.

ABC....1234
ABC....1235
(where .... represents the 5452 characters inbetween)

Just wondering if it allows you to store 5459 but only looks at the first 200 when referencing. Or to put it another way, if you reference ABC....1235 you actually get data related to ABC....1234

As I said, just curious but would be nice to know if there is a first N number of character vs the whole string.

When I told about 200 characters, I mean that at business cases is 99% probability that you don't need name with more then 200 symbols. If we talk about system, of course "ABC....1234" and "ABC....1235" is different names.

Let me ask the question a different way - In some system I have used previously, the fields can hold many characters. However if for example you have two people with very similar, very long names, the system only looked at the first 50 characters or something and would always return the same person, you had to use a different key to reference the other person. So what I am curious about is if anyone know if TM1 suffers from this limitation or short-cut. I guess it would be easy enough to test but was just wondering.

Will try and configure a test case and report back (if no-one else does)

1064 characters (not all charcters displaying in this post-they head off into darkness on the right) with only the last 1 character differing.

A DBRW against each of the now ridiculously long aliases yields the same value as the principle name. Did not bother to check any longer.
