COGNOS BI / TM1 on Distributed environment - Poor performanc

Hi All,
I want to reach out to the TM1 and COGNOS community and get some feed-back on performance when running COGNOS BI and TM1 on separate servers in a distributed environment.
We are currently getting poor performance when refreshing our reports through BI when the applications are on separate servers. In a development environment where both TM1 and COGNOS BI are on the same server the time to refresh reports in most cases takes half the time. We are currently on TM1 10.1.1 and COGNOS BI 10.2.1.
So hoping to get some opinions on what the Pros and Cons are of being on a distributed environment vs both TM1 and COGNOS BI being on the same server. The only issue I can see of having both applications on the same server ( like Cognos Express ) is performance where both applications are competing for the same resources. I would argue though that if the servers had an adequate amount of cores and ram then there should not be in issue??
We have been in contact with IBM several times to tweak performance, and have had our reports re-written / rebuilt , and TM1 has been optimised. I understand that moving the latest version of TM1 10.2 will garner additional gains in performance by switching MTQ and also utilising stargate caching within TM1 to speed up performance, but I believe that the issues we are currently facing in this distributed environment are network related . So does it really matter if both applications are on the same server ( I would like to get the gain in performance) ? Or should we stick to a distributed environment. We currently have roughly 20-30 TM1 users and 1000 users for BI.
Cheers
Zark
