We have a TM1 server set on a VMware machine.

I found the connection response from remote architect client to the server is quite slow, it costs me almost 2.5 minutes to get the server's response after my user name and password are enter.

But when I logon the VMware machine and then logon to TM1 server from local, the response is very quick.

What's the problem, and how can I optimize it?

This could be a whole host of issues but would try the following to begin with:
Run a ping from a workstation to the virtual server and note the response times
Do the same from the server to the workstation
You can also run a pathping to double-check that the routing is not going around the world first.
If the responses are slow, networking may be the cause and IT may need to get involved to assist.
Note: ICMP traffic is often dropped if the destination is too busy or if admins have specifically blocked it.
Run these tests over a few hours to establish some kind of averages

If all seems normal here, could be anti-virus or resource allocation etc. etc.

Did you try searching for this topic before posting? There would have to be thousands of posts about this very topic (maybe a little exaggeration). it's a well known fact that the fat clients (Architect and Perspectives) require a lot of bandwidth and very low latency to be viable remote connections. Citrix and/or remote desktop is the most popular solution.

Have you done any research regarding TM1 and a WAN? If you doa search on here you'll find a lot of pointers. Pretty much the best options (at the moment) are TM1 web (or application server) and Cafe. I'd advise doing some research on these,

What is the performance like when you are actually using the system?

Population of the object tree can take some time on first log on, though over two minutes is a long time. I would expect you to have a very large number of objects in your instance (1000s). This includes all your views and subsets, public and private.

It might be helpful if you describe that state of your client, i.e. where is it in relation to your instance?
