Subset Editor Filter By View Extract Survey

In the course of creating my latest cinematic extravaganza I was explaining the role of the Filter By View Extract button in Subset Editor when I realised that:
(a) I had never gotten it to work in the way that I considered to be "right" and
(b) I have never found a practical use for it, especially after MDX appeared.

Which set me to wondering. What I was wondering is in the survey above.

I thought that it might be of curiosity value if nothing else.

Votes can be changed until the poll closes if you have second thoughts.

The only time I've ever used it is when doing user training. As far as I'm aware that's the last time any of the students used it as well.

Would be useful if they actually linked it with the MDX ability to filter by cube values so that you could record the expression as a way of explaining to new users/developers how the MDX filter function works. But you can't and it doesn't - so completely useless when the MDX option is available as an alternative.

Whenever I'm teaching TM1 to users I always make the point in the subset editor section "don't worry about this button, you will never use it."

It is a completely useless feature as it has context only when the subset editor is launched from a view and is restricted to hardcoded values. Its an anachronism to a time when TM1 didn't support MDX, the cube viewer was a whiz-bang modern user interface and the business PC of choice was an IBM 386.

You can do so much more, and better, with MDX that there is no reason to ever use it.

That's what I do too.

A cruel but fair assessment, I think.

Hi All,

I have just seen few times a MDX expression, but never worked in real time scenario.
Can someone please share a link where it has good number of examples for learning on MDX?

Thanks in advance :)

Deepak Jain

If you search this forum for MDX you will find plenty of examples, you will also see that almost every other MDX related post points users towards the "MDX Primer". So searching the forum or googling TM1 MDX Primer will be a strong position to start.

This is an interesting coincidence. Yesterday's "My Notifications" feed had someone raising this PM:
PI26187: TM1 SERVER CRASH AFTER RUN SUBSET OPTION "FILTER BY VIEW EXTRACT"

Customer TM1 server crash after run subset option "Filter by View Extract"
All this, and a server crash too.

They were probably reading this forum and thought they'd try out the functionality...

Actually that thought had crossed my mind. It'd be a heck of a coincidence otherwise.

"Hmm, that's interesting. So what does that function do, exactly?"

BOOOOOOM!

"Ooooh, s!!!!!!!!!!!t!"

Gee, sorry about that fellow forumer. I hope that wasn't your Production system there...

Somewhere in 9.5.2 there was a bug in the View Extract piece that caused an insta-crash. It was fixed in one of the FP releases. Perhaps they ran into that bug?
