Server Explorer opening slow over the WAN

Hi,

We are testing performance in one of our projects over the WAN, with Perspectives.

The login (both native and AD through BI), querying data from cube viewer, slicing to excel, DBRW, etc. are working quite well, surprisingly well - response time for querying a cube, or drill down is about 2-3 seconds.

There is only one thing which is painfully slow: opening Server Explorer (both in Perspectives and Architect, so this is not an Perspectives-only issue) - it can take 1-2-3 minutes to collect and display the objects when opening the Server Explorer.
Do you have any recommendations on how it could be speeded up a bit?

Thanks
Matyas

Suggestions
1/ Don't do it. Architect/Perspectives just isn't designed for use over WAN
2/ Reduce the number of objects on the server or to which connecting WAN users have access to, to an absolute bare minimum to minimize as much as possible the redrawing time of the server explorer object tree
3/ Use Citrix or Terminal Services

Don't forget about TM1 Web Lotsaram. I'm not sure if it would be a good fit in this case but that was also deisgned for a WAN.

I agree but the OP was specific about Architect/Perspectives thick client and that most definitely isn't designed for WAN. If that functionality is absolutely required then Citrix/TS is the only way.

There's Cafe of course in TM1 10+. IMO it isn't quite ready yet but it is IBM's direction for working with TM1 in Excel, and it is WAN-friendly.

Perspectives was indeed only mentioned, but it's functionality wasn't mentioned as requirement, that's why I questioned if it would be a good fit.

A good option if you can live with the short term pain, but it depends if we're only talking about reporting.

Hi
Yes, I was quite specific about Perspectives, I know features of TM1 Web and Café.
Café could be an option, but at the moment it cannot provide such a flexible solution for data upload as Perspectives with DBSW formulas; we import many Excel templates to TM1 currently. But I agree, I also expect enhancements in the coming versions.

BTW, we can upload ca. 2500 figures in 10 seconds over the WAN with dbsw, so it is not that bad, performance is really acceptable, except for showing up the Server Explorer.

Anyway, thanks for your input, most probably we will show all 4 options (Web, Café, Perspectives, Perspectives over a remote desktop) and leave the choice for the users.

Thanks
