Persepctives not showing servers running

Post by Ajay »

Hello All

I wondered if any of you have come across a similar issue during installations.

I've recently performed a new installation of Cognos Express Xcelerator 10.2.1 on a physical server. The services have started nicely and as a complete check I've also installed a copy of Perspectives on the server to make sure I can log into the server and run a few "slices and dices" like normal end users would do.

I've then installed Xcelerator Perspectives Client on an end-user's laptop, via the Cognos Express Manager (hosted on the same server), and upon completion enabled the Excel "add-in" and ensured that the correct "Admin Host" is in his Server Explorer options.

However, this is the error I get:
End User Perspectives Error
End User Perspectives Error
Perspectives Error.png (34.21 KiB) Viewed 7129 times

It appears to the end user as if the TM1 services are not running. If it was security based I'd still expect the "Servers" application to be visible, along with any data servers underneath it, and depending on whether the user had access to log onto them or not, but this seems to suggest that TM1 is not running, despite the server (and it's services) clearly running.

For information we are running Excel 2010.

Any suggestions gladly received.

Thanks
Ajay

The issue is likely with the admin host string. Make sure the admin host server is accessible from the machine in question and that the name used resolves correctly. You might have to experiment with a fully qualified domain name (server.domain.whatever) as opposed to just the server name. Another option is to use the IP address of the server.

Also seen this when the firewalls on the server aren't opened up.

Easy to check by seeing if the exact same connection properties work when using architect directly on the server vs over a network.

If it is a new server like a win 2012 (piece of excrement) then it is probably the ports as everything is firewalled off by default these days. You need to make sure that both the adminhost port AND the TM1 server port are open (the adminhost port to be able to see the server in the list of servers and the server port to be able to log in and do stuff).
Please place all requests for help in a public thread. I will not answer PMs requesting assistance.

It's running on Win Server 2008 Standard, but I did have to open up the port to get the user to access the Cognos Express Manager URL, which was on port 19300.

He couldn't get the client downloaded until I did this.

As you say it does look port/network related.

Since the AdminHost and dataserver are on the same machine, am I right to say that this will be the port defined in the TM1s.cfg file ?

Cheers

Are you using DNS short names in the Admin Host setting with Perspectives? I've issues in the past (depending on server setup) where DNS short names aren't being recognised, only DNS long Names. For example computer.domain.com works but computer doesn't,

Ajay,

While you define a port in the CFG, windows allocates the ports. You'll need to check which ports windows is currently using as you may have a conflict. Details on how to check the ports:

Yes, I am using the DNS shortname in the AdminHost box in perspectives. I change it to the long name and see if that works first, otherwise I will try opening the relevant ports

Sorry for being a bit slow in my update.

I can confirm that the issue was resolved by allowing the tm1 service applications in the firewall and opening the following ports:

PortNumber
ClientMessagePort

Thanks to all for assistance.
