Upgrade from Applix TM1 8.4 to IBM Cognos TM1 10.2

Post by Matya »

Hi All!

Has anyone had any experience about upgrading from Applix TM1 8.4 to IBM Cognos TM1 10.2?
Is it quite simple like upgrading from 9.5 to 10.2? (save -> shut down -> uninstall -> install -> run)
Is there any known issue? (like for example: 9.5 -> 10.2 - have to change the TM1 Web's xml)

Thx a lot,
M

Correct me if I'm wrong guys but there is the Unicode issue to over come. Also unless you've changed your contract with IBM there be licensing issues involved as 8.4 was before it chnaged to per CPU.

The Unicode barrier exists but it isn't really an issue; it's just a case of once the database files have been converted, there's no going back. We went from 9.0 (pre-Unicode) to 9.5.2 and aside from acknowledging a warning that once the files are converted they can't be unconverted, there wasn't anything to do. It's not like you'll lose any data in the upgrade.

I wouldn't assume on the licencing though; that's a site by site issue. I know of at least one site that's on 10.2 but is still on a ye olde concurrent user licence, which is still being honoured.

If you're using 8.4 Web, I would suggest that you definitely do this in a test environment first to get your head around how 10.2's web works. I didn't have the questionable pleasure of using any of the 8.x webs, though I know that even 9.0's was still gawdsawful. 9.1 was the first one that I set up seriously, and 9.5.2 is the first one that's gone to full production. But even from there I'd want to run the 10.2 incarnation in a test environment for long enough to be comfortable with it. The whole underlying structure has changed. (And to be honest from the bugs I've read about in 10.2 Web I'd be reluctant to go there anyway yet; it's effectively version 1.0 of the Tomcat incarnation of Web.)

In fact I recommend doing everything in a test environment first anyway. There is no earthly way I would just run an update in a production environment and hope that nothing breaks, especially across that many versions. Before we went to 9.5 we ran cross-checks of the data against our production cubes (checking rules in particular), did comparative runs of all of our TIs and so on.

This is something that depends on the company size, region and the sales rep. Just because it applies to one or even some, I wouldn't take it as a given.

Isn't that what I said when I said "that's a site by site issue"?
