Re-order of dimensions fails, another similar cube ok..?

Post by mr j »

Hi gurus,

didn't quite know how to put a topic on this, but I'd like to hear if anyone has come across this and tell me a missing procedure or something of the sort. It's IBM Cognos Express 10.1 in question.

In Architect I reordered dimensions in a cube A which is used as a source for a Target cube. Also updated the rules in the target cube and the feeders. Since nothing appeared in the target anymore I double checked, ran DeleteAllPersistentFeeders with TI (whether actually needed or not), restarted the services but still nothing. Only when I restored the original order of dimensions it's working again.

Why I'm not going into detail regarding the density of dimensions, how many there are etc. is that there's another cube B with exactly the same dimensions and order of dimensions as I tried to change the cube A to and yes, Cube B is ok as a source. I've tested rules for A and B in Target cube separately and also their sum DB(A.. + DB(B.. (don't pay attention to the syntax here :) )

Therefore I'm thinking there's something I've missed when changing the order of dimensions, but which step could it be?

Have you patched up to the latest version? Have you checked the known issue log? Personally I've not seen this. Have you also done on a search on this site to see if anybody else has hit something similar?

Hi Jim,

Just found this, related to TM1 9.5.1 and they suggest upgrade to 10.1..:

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.w ... wg1PM47405

Does the mentioned "Reproccessing the feeders allows the data to correct itself, however should not be required." mean TI function "CubeProcessFeeders(CubeName)" ?

Patches: Not yet. Definitely should. Listed fixes don't mention this, but.. I know, I know..
Known issue log: Yes, checked.
This site: Yes. Well, could always be more thorough with the search, I guess.

I never use the re-order feature EXCEPT to find out the best order. I then go and physically rebuild the cube to that best order.

Ok..? Because of something of the sort I described? I could imagine your method keeps you better on track of what exactly is going on.

Tomok,

by doing so your missing out on the whole point of re-order. It doesn't (or shouldn't) alter the physical order of the cube. In large cubes you should re-order on a scheduled basis as the optimal order can change depending on the data within the cube. Changing the physical order of the cube is not possible if you have stacks of Excel reports using the cube,

Just now ignoring Jim's interesting comment regarding what Tomok said,

Surprisingly and conveniently (sarcasm applied) IBM Fix Central is not working so right now I can't download FP1 for Express 10.1 to try that out, but meanwhile I dare to ask a clarification to versions,

For example in the doc I linked previously it says for TM1 9.5.1
"RECOMMENDATION: Upgrade to IBM Cognos TM1 10.1.0 "

Now, if I've got Cognos Express 10.1 can I assume that the 'TM1 in the background' is equal to the actual TM1 10.1?

That's correct, it is TM1 10.1. Oh and by the way, why would you want to ignore any of my comments????? ;)

Ha! What you wrote about re-ordering of dimensions made me think there's possibly something there I'm not familiar with at all... so, it's a primitive reaction, you know, fear of a new thing, denial, bliss of ignorance etc. :D

Now, however, there's new issues. I installed the Fix Pack 1. Then installed the Architect. Now when I launch it from the Win Start shortcut I get a prompt
”A newer version of Architect is now available. Would you like to proceed with downloading the latest version?” with options Yes/No. Latter closes the prompt and that's it. Option "Yes" takes you to the Manager page to download and install it again. In the process of doing so there comes a message ”IBM Cognos Express Architect 10.1.0.1.0016 Already Installed” etc. stating there's no need to do anything.

tm1a.exe in the folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\Cognos Express Clients\Architect\bin" shows the old date and version/build 10.1.104.27809. Now I'd need confirmation from somewhere which build number is "prior Fix Pack" and which is "after Fix Pack"?

I've some strange behavior like this with Express. Did you make sure you stopped all services and followed the pre-instructions before applying the fix pack?

You've had..? I don't know whether that's comforting or not.. prior to this the original installation did not install Data Advisor even though the Express admin -page said everything is ok.

With Fix Pack Everything was stopped and I believe I did what was supposed to be done.

Now I'll go out with the daughter..
