Requirements to be a product Architect!!!

Post by gbehel »

Hi All,

if i want to become a product architect (of Tm1 and Cognos Planning), then What do i need to more. Im fairly experienced on Cognos EP and have a working experience on TM1 but Im no where closed to being called a product Architect

Any advise on what should I know as a framework to be a product architect.

I Might be sounding silly here. However, i was wondering on what should i know if i decide to become a product architect

Any help or advise will be highly appreciated

Thanks
Gbehel

Normally one of the key parts for an architect roll is experience. I don't say that to be glib. I mean that to be able to function well as architect you not only have to know the software, you need to have experience of many different implementations, so you have a wide knowledge base of the different ways of doing things so you can apply the best fit for the requirements being put in front of you.

I would suggest (and this is my own opinion here) that somebody needs at least 5 years of experience. This can of course, differ per individual,

Jim.

Depends who you want to work for; there are a number of architects out there I wouldn't employ as a junior developer.

If you want to be good at it though you need to have a wide enough variety of experience that you know how to design the most complex system to work as efficiently as possible.

You may want to look at a job spec for the role with a reputable organisation.

Are you including yourself in that group? As in any tool, the quality of the people "specializing" in that tool has nothing to do with the tool itself, but rather with how "hot" that particular tool is in the marketplace. TM1 is hot right now so it's attracting a lot of unqualified people looking to cash in. Just like you wouldn't hire some guy off the street to do your vasectomy neither should you for your TM1 solution. Regardless, more and more companies are doing that. That's why IBM is so keen on pushing people to Performance Modeler where at least you are forced to do things a certain way.

Yes Tomok,
It is so hot !! and even MVP made it more hot, that IBM has stopped positioning TM1. Just for your information there is no new projects on TM1 in entire world....... :)

Sorry, I may be misunderstanding what you are saying here... if you are saying that new new developments/no new customers are using TM1 as their tool of choice, you are very wrong.

Well I can guarantee you are. I have been involved in a few sales engagements in 2014 already with new customers taking up the product and more likely to come.
TM1 is a market leading product and it's user base (and that of Cognos Express) is growing.

I'm not sure why you think that no one is using it anymore, perhaps it is true with your company but certainly not any of the ones I have been involved with (or heard about.)

Well what do you know, your wish has (magically?) come true! Now you can add it to the list of things you have been wrong about.
