Production and Test environment

Post by conray »

I always wanted to ask this question:
Does setting up a testing environment requires an additional server license?
Server OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)
TM1: v9.5.2 FP1
MS Office: Microsoft Excel 2003, 2010

This is what we have in our Licence invoice
IBM COGNOS ENTERPRISE PLANNING TM1 FOR NON-PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT PROCESSOR VALUE UNIT (PVU) ANNUAL SW
SUBSCRIPTION & SUPPORT RENEWAL(From01 Apr 2013 To 31 Mar 2014)
So I guess the answer is Yes.

Conray,

It depends on how/where you intend to implement it.
If you have a PVU based server licence for full fat TM1, you can have as many instances of TM1 as you want on that server e.g. you can just set up 2 services "Prod" & "Test" perhaps even throw in a "Dev" for good measure.

Of course there are risks in having them all on the same box, so you could farm them out to other boxes at which point you would pay the lower priced "Non Prod Environment" PVU based price - which still isn't cheap but I would say its worthwhile if you intend to do lots of extra dev while people are using the system.

Worth noting that if you have "Prod" and "Dev" on a 1 server for all approach and you were to use TM1 Web etc. then there would only be one web service running so you couldn't experiment with changing config options without it effecting both "Prod" and "Dev".
