Unable to modify dimension
Hi
Seems a bit strange..working on a customer site..tried to EDIT a dimension under Architect/Perspective and move a child element from one to the other...After saving and exiting...It reverts back to the original ????
Why is that ? Is it because it was edit via XDI and refuses to accept any direct editing ? No Security access issues...
Am i missing the obvious AGAIN !! ??
Is this another DUH situation ?

Re: Unable to modify dimension
Please tell me you didn't double-click on the dimension in Server Explorer in order the "edit" it.

Re: Unable to modify dimension
Because a lot of people (especially new users) do open up Subset Editor and think that they're editing the dimension.mukeshrajdass wrote:I did edit in the Server Explore - Edit Dimension..Why ?
I really don't like dimension editor, at all. I use it under duress from time to time but wherever possible I do low maintenance dims through an .xdi and high maintenance dims through TI.
That having been said, you should NEVER edit a dimension which uses an .xdi through any method other than its .xdi. If you add a new element through the Dimension Editor (say) and add an element, then someone comes along and thinks "Oh look, an .xdi" and goes ahead and recompiles it, then bang, you've lost your element and you've lost your data. In theory the Dimension Editor should ask you if you want to update the .xdi sheet, in practice that may not always happen, depending on where the sheets are stored.
I believe that the core problem is that the Dimension Editor is just "finnicky", which is why I really don't like it. I've found that when it ignores my structural changes I can sometimes force the issue by adding a dummy element after I've done my changes, saving the dimension, going back into the editor and deleting the dummy element. You can try that and see whether it makes a difference.

Re: Unable to modify dimension
Because if you double-click to edit a dimension you aren't. You are in subset editor, which for some very stupid reason, looks almost exactly like the dimension editor. If I had a nickel for every person that has posted in here thinking they were trying to edit a dimension and couldn't understand why it didn't work, and they were actually working with a subset, I could quit my day job and just harass people here full time.mukeshrajdass wrote:I did edit in the Server Explore - Edit Dimension..Why ?

Re: Unable to modify dimension
Also telling us what version you're working on will help. I've noticed some strange behaviour with the dimension editor in version 10.1,

Re: Unable to modify dimension
The funny stuff I saw started with copy and paste not working, also it wouldn't save dimension changes. Stopping and starting the service seemed to sort it out,
