I've spent months unable to use architect on my PC because the dropdowns are empty.
It seems it was a Wacom tablet I'd installed causing the error.
I'm not sure if it's uninstalling the Wacom drivers or the 'Tablet features' via control panel that ultimately fixed it though.
Sorry for being a bit odd and posting a solution to my own question, but hopefully this will show up in google next time someone has a similar issue!
