What is appropriate migration path from TM1 v9.5.0 to TM1 v9

Post by abcuser »

Hi,
I am just wondering what is appropriate migration path from TM1 v9.5.0 to TM1 v9.5.1. I am currently using v9.5.0 and was strongly advised from IBM that I should migrate to v9.5.1, because of stability problems of v9.5.0.

What is appropriate migration path? Can I do the following:
1. Windows services and stop all Cognos TM1 servers and make sure from Task Manager that there is no tm1xxxxx.exe service running.
2. Copy the Cognos TM1 directory to save location (backup).
3. Just install v9.5.1 over EXISTING installation.
4. Start TM1 v9.5.1 server Windows service.

Is above migration appropriate or should I do some other tasks like uninstalling v9.5.0 software first?
Thanks

The appropriate path is to:
(a) Read the Version 9.5.1 Installation Guide, then
(b) Follow the 9.5.1 Installation Guide.

Particularly the bit (chapter 14, page 128) which reads:
TM1® 9.5 does not support automatic upgrading from a previous version of TM1. If you are upgrading to TM1 9.5, you must back up your previous TM1 database, uninstall the previous version, install TM1 9.5, then restore your database.
While this is a little ambiguous with regard to whether 9.5.0 is a "previous version" relative to 9.5.1, I would think that "better to be safe" is the rule to follow.

Links to the documentation downloads including the Installation Guide are of course, as with many things, found in the FAQ thread.

Jup, I am little bit confused by the article: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/ ... ml?ca=drs-
where is written: "Note: If you are upgrading from a prior TM1 version such as TM1 9.4.1, it is not necessary to uninstall the prior version if you will be installing TM1 9.5 into the same directory. TM1 9.5 will overwrite the previous version program files in that directory. Your data directories should not be affected by the installation of TM1 9.5 over a prior version."

I have also read read some other info from the web: Upgrading should be supported from v9.4, but previous versions should uninstall/install. But this info is for v9.5.0. I can't find any info on the net for v9.5.1.

Given how easy it is to copy and restore TM1 models, why anyone would do anything other than uninstall/reinstall when going to a new version of TM1 baffles me. I mean, c'mon, what are you looking at, saving a few hours of time? How often do you upgrade a TM1 version anyway? You've probably wasted your time savings already.

You are right about uninstalling/installing about time, but in our case we have TM1 login integration with Cognos BI, so it need to be configured. I was just thinking if I do just install over existing files will config files be preserved or not. I am responsible for many servers and configurations, I am just looking at the simplest way to do the trick and to minimize the down time of servers.

You can shortcut all you want on DEV or QA but I would NEVER do anything other than a fresh install when upgrading a production TM1 server.

I'd second that; it's just not worth the risk. You take the shortcut, everything looks fine, then 3 weeks down the track something just "doesn't work right" and it's down to some garbage left over from a previous install. I'm all for shortcuts... just not the kind that have the potential to cause future headaches.
