Applix TM1 9.0 SP3 is compatible with Windows 7 and IE 8?

The background is, our client has undertaken internal IT initiative where by all existing applications need to be compatible with Windows 7 and IE 8.

They are using Applix TM1 9.0 SP3. Whether this version of TM1 is compatible with Windows 7 and IE8?

I did an online search but unable to locate any relevant information since Applix TM1 9.0 SP3 is a relatively old version of TM1.

An oldie but a goodie.

As Steve correctly points out the links to the supported versions is in the FAQ. And neither of those is supported in 9.0. (As indeed 9.0 and 9.1 themselves aren't any more, though even when they were the "support" consisted of "upgrade to a new version even if it's too memory hungry to run on 32 bit, because we aren't making any more changes to those versions".)

As to whether it will work, however...

I can't help you with the IE8 question since I haven't run 9.0 Web, but with Client/Perspectives the version of Excel is far more important than the O/S. Running it with Excel 2003 on my Windows 7 Ultimate notebook was no problem at all when I was testing out 9.0 last year. Running it under Excel 2007... well, it worked, though you'll get a bunch of error messages each time you start up and apparently the tm1.xla's macros will be disabled but I didn't find what, if any, effect that had.

Unless you're on 32 bit, near your memory ceiling and can't get the funds to upgrade to 64 bit, I would recommend that you start making plans to upgrade.

A rather interesting Technote on this subject was posted earlier this week:

Starting with TM1 version 9.5.1, Windows 7 is supported but only the 32bit version of Windows 7. It is supported for use with the various TM1 clients (Perspectives/Architect/TM1Web/Contributor) only and should, therefore, not be used for a production TM1 server.

At this writing our info center documentation (erroneously) does not mention that Windows 7 32bit version is supported. Nor does it note that IE8 is supported for TM1 Web and Windows 2008 is supported for both 32 and 64bit TM1 server. There is also another doc available that does mention the support for IE8, Windows 2008 and Windows 7 but it does not clarify that it is only Windows 7 32bit that is supported.

A request has been submitted to our documentation group to have these discrepancies corrected. Once the documentation has been updated, the below links will be updated with the correct information.

Yeah i caught that and read it to understand as;

CLIENT: Win7 32bit is fine. Win7 64bit is a no.
SERVER: Win7 32bit ok but 64bit not. Win Server 2008 ok on both 32/64bit.

What on the client is "missing" from (Perspectives/Architect/TM1Web/Contributor) anyway? We only use the first 2 so i'm not sure why they advise not to use in a production environment. We don't have 64bit client machines, hell we are struggling to get a 64bit server, so as far as i can see other than the frickin' annoying fact that IBM still don't support 9.5 with Office 2010 there is no issue...or have i missed something really obvious?

I have been running TM1, both server (32-bit and 64-bit) and client on my 64-bit Windows 7 desktop for over a year now with nary a problem. I would never run a producton instance on this setup, but then who would? Windows 7 is not a server class OS anyway.

This technote has been updated to advise that Windows 7 64 bit is not supported. It has been expanded with further information about other supported client/server environments as well.

One wonders about exactly how the support matrix is compiled. Is there a reason for this omission, or is it just not "officially" supported because someone forgot to list it? For example Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 Enterprise is curiously not a supported environment for Cognos Express, (however if you have a model greater than 32GB then this is the only solution.)

Its definitely not a production environment but I have been running 64 bit 9.5.1 on my win7 x64 laptop for the best part of a year with no problem whatsoever. (I can't see why anyone would choose any flavour of win7 as the OS for a true production server environment though.)

My best guess is that since testing resources are finite, Iboglix decided to apply them only to the "most likely" environments. I don't have stats on it, but I'd be surprised if Windows 64 bit (of any version, on client workstations) has pushed far into double digit penetration of the corporate market in particular. There's just far too much legacy 32 bit software out there (especially some in house applications), and if you're a CIO you'd have to be wondering "why even take the chance on compatibility issues by upgrading the desktops when it doesn't gain you that much anyway?" Yes, most 32 bit applications should be workable on a Win 64 bit platform in Theory. I want to move to that wonderful place named Theory; everything works there.

Yeah, I think you've pretty much nailed the reason right there. I wouldn't anticipate any major problems with TM1 Client or Server under Win 7 64 bit (Web I don't want to think about; I don't need any more nightmares); they haven't certified it, but "not supported" doesn't mean "won't work". However with it never needing to run a server in anger, and not often being needed for client as mentioned above, it's well probably down the batting order for testing.
