Free Alternatives of TM1

Post by comma »

I'm looking for TM1 alternatives which are free for personal use or educational purposes. From this forum, I can tell that Palo and Keystone are two of them.
Which one is easier for someone coming from TM1? Is there any other alternatives? I would prefer the one that has the same look and feel with TM1.

I've seen Cognos Express as well but I'm still not 100% sure, is it free or not?

The open source version of Palo is probably your best bet. The Excel add-in version is the closest to TM1. Cognos Express, BTW, is most definitely not free. It's just a version targeted at middle-market companies.

Another question then, are the system requirements for Palo on par with TM1? If I have a 5GB model on TM1, will the same model require 5GB as well on Palo?
I wouldn't mind if someone can provide informations for Keystone too

I've done some projects with Palo in the past, small models go quite well in Palo. But in the most cases if the model getst bigger, with bigger cubes and more rules, you will get problems with performance, rules do somethimes not what you thnk they should do and building the model can become a pain.
What I would do is just rebuild a part of the model in Palo and just find out if it is working out the way you like it (use version 2.5, that's the most stable version).

Good Luck!

Keystone is still a very young product and to get much useful information you'll have to speak to the developer directly (Ben Hill, his username on here is kyro). Palo has a much bigger customer and support base and quite a bit more history, but with Keystone you'd be getting in on the ground floor and I've no doubt that Ben would be very eager to help you get it working well if you ending up dealing with a customer of some reasonable size. It does also have a more similar front end to TM1 (not that I've spent much time with either Palo or Keystone).

I believe Ben doesn't intend to keep Keystone free forever whereas Palo have made a commitment to keep the community edition free.

OK, I'll try Palo then. Btw, it seems that the Palo subforum isn't very lively (the last post was 6 months ago).
Is there no Palo developer anymore in this forum?

We dont work with Palo but from what I have heard second hand:
- If you have lots of calculations make sure the performance under Palo is acceptable compared to TM1
- I assume you would need the 64 bit version of Palo which I understand is not free. In fact, Cognos Express could be cheaper.

I will wait to be corrected by anyone who has first hand experience of Palo!

There are a few TM1 developers who also work with Palo, but the far busier Palo forums is over on Jedox's site: http://www.jedox.com/community/palo-forum/
