memory under-usage problem

Post by yyi »

Hi Everyone

We have a virtual server environment running on 64bit hardware & 64bit windows 2003 standard edition.
TM1 is 32bit. Assigned resource on the server is 2cores with 6Gb memory.

When TM1(tm1sd.exe) nears the 2Gb mark, it seems to run very very slow and most times crash out.
If windows is meant to give 4Gbs, are there any reason why this happens, and if there are any
known solutions?

Many thanks
Yeon

Known solution? I'm afraid it's reach into your (hopefully deep) pockets and upgrade to 64 bit. Because the way I read this:
Microsoft Support wrote:32-bit programs still use the 4-GB tuning model (2 GB User and 2 GB Kernel). This means that 32-bit processes that run on 64-bit versions of Windows run in a 4-GB tuning model (2 GB User and 2GB Kernel). 64-bit versions of Windows do not support the use of the /3GB switch in the boot options
the 2 gig of user space is all you get running 32 bit TM1 in a 64 bit environment. (Happy to be corrected on that point if anyone knows better, though; it's not something that I've researched deeply.)

Thanks Alan,

I guess then it's time to hand over to Finance Dept and negotiations with IBM...

Hi,
I did not test this using 9.5.1, my previous version was 9.0.3 U9 and I could use 4 GB under 32 bit TM1 / 64 bit Win 2003 (ran this for about 2 years), now I am on 64 / 64.
Since I had an upgrade from 32 / 32 to 32 / 64 I wanted to see how the change will affect my available memory.
I recognized even under 32 bit OS, the identifier in the task manager is not mem usage, it's VM size which tells the true memory usage (and limit).
I could use nearly 3 GB (with switch turned on) under 32 bit and was able to use about 4 GB under 64 bit OS.
This helped me to postpone my 64 bit application upgrade until next server refresh.

Regards
Gabor
