TM1 and Office 2013?

Post by David Usherwood »

I'm speccing a new laptop. Since I have 'pioneer' in my job description, and I have two working W7 laptops, I'm minded to try W8, having run it up under a VM and being impressed by snappiness (not by the silly frontend, but one keystroke gets rid of it, and there are a number of aftermarket tools to help).
There have been postings on the forum to say that, although not 'supported', TM1 works fine with W8. My inquiry here is to ask whether anybody has tried TM1 with Office 2013. (I will be running Vmware as well - just in case.)
Feedback welcome.

I don't have Win8 installed yet. But TM1 9.5 can work with Office 2013 without any issue.
In TM1,the answer is always yes though sometimes with a but....

Hi David, hope you're well. I've been playing about with 10.1 on Excel 2013 for a couple of weeks without coming across any issues although not done a deep delve as of yet.

Not tried Windows 8 either, that horrible front end put me off even looking at it. Realise you can turn it off but I'm not keen on supporting a Windows version which is advertised predominantly on the dumbing down of the PC front end. The wife's of the opposite view though - as a tablet lover, she thinks it looks more user friendly. Horses for courses I guess.

Out of interest, are many organisations moving\planning to move to Win8\Excel 2013? Many of our customers are only just moving to Win 7 \Excel 2010.

Stephen - the general trend in medium-to-large companies seems to be moving onto Win7 now and that is mainly because of the WinXP support finally coming to an end in Apr 2014. I've not heard of any organisations moving onto Win8 and/or Office 2013 yet and with Win7 being a decent replacement for the reliable and oldie-but-goodie XP I don't suspect that to change anytime soon (next 5-10 years?!).

I did a couple of tests using 9.5.2 FP2, 10.1.1 and 10.1.1 FP1, all under Win7.
No major issues so far, that's correct, however there are dozen of minor things like:
- TM1 ribbon bar enabled shows a huge delay until TM1 is ready to work (especially 10.1.1 FP1)
- TM1 ribbon disabled (using old menue structure) has no delay, but TM1 menue disappears from time to time (Excel restart helps)
=> maybe driven by usage of .xdi after saving & closing the file
- Slice to extra workbook cannot be saved, needs to be turned on again and again

TM1 10.1 can work properly on Windows 8 and Office 2013. That is my recent testing results. :D
