New TI Editor

Last night I went to a presentation in Sydney about, amongst other things, a new text editor for TI that is about to be released by CubeWise, a Sydney company. This looks like the editor we (or at least I) have been waiting for!

From what I remember, it:

* works through the TM1 API
* has a colour, larger font text editor
* allows you to collapse sections of text
* store your processes in sub folders, not all in a root directory
* open a process without it automatically running SQL
* seemed to have decent debugging and error messages
* allows you to conmpile & check for errors without saving the process
* contains snippets of pre recorded code
* auto completes functions etc when you start entering them
* lets you rename processes using F2 like you do in Windows

There was other stuff, but I can't remember it all.

It also has an SQl editor built in, that allows you to select tables and graphically join fields whilst it generates the SQL for you. The code can then be cut into the editor.

Looks like a great toy. No mention of price, and release is in "about a month". Sorry, but I forgot what name they gave it!

Quick run down
- Nice ability to group ti processes by things like data source type, or searches for *MyProcess*
- "Hot promote" ability to take a TI object from dev environment into a live environment (plans to do this with other objects in the pipeline)
- Query builder similar to Access's GUI
- Code grouping ("regionalising") allows you to hide code, similar to Excel's grouping feature, which can be nested
- Standardised code can be inserted via snippets, which is extendable. E.g. building views
- Debug functionality saves the effort of writing your own asciioutput code (best feature for me)
- Useful prompts for functions - gives you the syntax and argument order
- Syntax colouring, indenting ifs etc
- Find and replace. Undo and redo.

Summary: good little tool. Price point is fairly sensible. Would recommend to people who have fairly recently graduated from the TI wizard. Not quite enough there yet (for my money) for experienced developers to get ROI, but I think it will get there fairly quickly with a few extensions to the debug ability. My demo was a little buggy with a few crashes, but it was still a pre-release version.

Bundled with an initial buy I think it makes sense - consultants, it might be worth investigating as a resellable product. Demoes much better than the TI editor if you need to demo (for example) a pull in from a ODBC GL.

Worth getting a demo anyway.

Still waiting for a few bugs so as to work straight off a 64-bit box.

Agree with some of Martin's points but a big plus for me is it reduces a risk. Ie IT and boss speaking: "what happens if you get hit by a bus? Will anyone know what you have done in TI and still be able to run the system? " This will become my answer to this question and hopefully mitigate the organisation's reliance on me as a "technical expert", which I hate Will go along way in standardising the outcomes in TI and more significantly improving productivity.

One thing that this does, which I know some of my older colleagues will appreciate, is that you can have the font any size you like. This of course means that you can actually read the script you are writing which I've known to be an issue, let alone debugging it.

We just had a cubewise led demo and are working with a trial.

As far as the Extend TI Editor it seems to do a fairly good job of tackling some of the real annoyances of TI. Debugging, not running the SQL repeatedly, intellisense and copying processes to a new server without the hassle of restarting. We saw a beta (they are talking about a December release) and though there was issues it is a very good first pass. As someone who coded in Visual Studio for years going to TM1 was a huge step back and this tool brings back some of the productivity tools that you start to rely on.

In talking with their rep I was also impressed that they seem very dedicated to producing a whole suite of administration products to fill the gaps where Cognos seems to be ignoring some of the glaring holes in the entire application management side. Given the dev time I really think that these guys can produce some really great tools for the user base.

Sigh... I was so looking forward to trying this thing out. Alas I can't put it on my server until I've checked it out on an isolated machine first, which would be my notebook. Then my notebook's screen died and I had to get a new one. And thus far I haven't finished installing all of the software on it.

Remember when getting a new computer was fun? Now it's a boooooooring, teeeeeedious chore.

And I can't remember where my CS2 disks are, and CS3 was an upgrade.

Call me daft if you will but I actually enjoy rebuilding machines. That's why I never bother with ghost. I just keep all software on a USB hard drive, attach it after the OS installation is finished and then do the rest. Told you it is fun!!
