Combining Cubes into One

Post by RNB »

Hi. I'm lost. I'm on version 10.2.1. I've been asked to combine our ROW and US Salary Cubes and processes to reduce redundancy.
I've identified all of the supporting cubes in the Rules and created new cubes and loaded them with data. I've done the same for all of the dimensions.
No data is loaded directly into the Salary Cubes. The dimensions are updated via TI processes. The current structure takes information from the externally feed Employee History Cube and depending on employee attributes pushes that information into either the ROW or Salary Cube.

I created a Salary Cube and used the same Dimension Structure but pointed directly to the Employee Dim used by the Employee History Cube. I replaced the Region specific Version and Measure cubes with the existing Version cube that feeds the Regional Version Cubes (Copies). I created a new Measures Dim and combined the data from the Regional Specific Dims.

I've reviewed all cube rules including the supporting cubes to ensure Order and Cube/Dim names are accounted for. I used Export and Import scripts to move the data into new cubes. I expected once all the Dimensions and supporting cubes contained data the new Salary cube would display the existing data. No data displays. I then attempted to load data from the Salary ROW Cube into the new Salary Cube and am receiving Rule Applies to Cell errors.

1. When you create a cube that points at existing data in dimensions why is it necessary to load data into the cube? No data is directly loaded into the existing cubes.

2. While importing data should I pound out the rules first? Since the data is in the existing cube I copied the rules from I'd expect the data to load.

Thanks.

Hi RNB,
You've used some confusing terminology, not sure if that is just an error in the post or an indication of a deeper issues.

"When you create a cube that points at existing data in dimensions why is it necessary to load data into the cube? No data is directly loaded into the existing cubes."

The first part of the above makes no sense in TM1 terms. No data is ever held in a dimension, all data is held in cubes. Somewhere there must be data in your system even if the cubes you are working are entirely rule driven.

The error you are getting is because you are loading data to cells in the cube that are already defined by rules, sounds like you know this.

I can't really answer point 2 as it depends on what you are trying to achieve. Bare in mind if you unpound the rules after loading the data you will lose the data.

Sounds like there is a flaw in your rebuild job at the moment.
