Action Button

Post by nayitian »

Hi, may you help with some issues regarding Action Button?

1) How to adjust the size of the button?
2) Once an Action Button is added in the sheet, I am not able to move it to tweak the position
3) The button caption displays fine in the sheet, but it gets truncated when viewing in TM1 web

Thank you for helping.

well i dont know if you can or cant really, this is just my personal experience, but so far, i dont know if there are parameter to modificate the size of the button, one time i added an image inside the button and i changed the size, but as far as i know, you can't change the location of the button and not the size, one you select one sheet, the button stuck in there for eternity.
I recommend you to choose the position of the buttons before adding.

You need to switch on the Design Mode of Excel (done differently in different versions of Excel) and in that mode you will be able to resize/move the Action Button.

Assuming you have Excel 2007, the way to do it is:

Click the Office Button
Click the Excel Option button at the bottom, then you will enter the Excel Option window
Click the Popular button at the left
Under Top Option for Working with Excel, check the Show Developer tab in the Ribbon option
Click Ok button to finish editing
Click the Developer tab
Go to the Controls group
Use the Design Mode button to toggle the mode on/off

To add I would point out that when you are doing menus etc where you want buttons nicely in line, they can often appear out of position in the web as opposed to excel so I have now resorted to going directly into the object properties through the design mode and selecting the amount of pixels from the left of the page etc.

Its certainly a bit picky when it comes to formatting...

In design mode you can use the 'alt' key to align to rows and/or columns.

Click on the sides or corners, press 'alt' and drag with the mouse.

This would then lead to worksheets with many columns that are say, 1 column width apart, which you could use to align it how you want. Gives you greater control over presenting information in excel.

I have done this many times. Reports are slower to build, but your layout and presentation is enhanced as a result. This can work with or without TM1.

Quite handy when trying to present data and text and trying to align it all nicely when text can be wider then numbers etc.

You can do the same in excel with charts as well by holding down the 'Alt' key and aligning the charts to rows and columns.

If you find that your action buttons magically move around and/or grow in size without you editing them, then still in the Developer ribbon Object Properties menu on the Action Button, change the Placement value from 2 to 1.

Any changes you make manually to an Action Button in Excel Developer mode may be unexpectedly undone when you later right-click on it and change the button's TM1 Properties.
