TM1 Clients for lower versions

Post by macsir »

Hi, All

In 9.5.2 tm1 installation doc, I can see these words. There are two versions of Clients, TM1 Client and TM1 Perspectives. Can anyone tells me the difference between them? I can see one is limited and another is not. If there is any snapshot for TM1 Client, that would be great.

They're the same add-in; that is, the tm1p.xla add-in. The only difference is the presence or absence of a Perspectives licence file.

Perspectives is intended to be used for:
- Running a local server for personal modelling or development;
- Doing administrative work such as setting up security groups, updating dimensions, creating cubes, writing TI processes and so on.

If the Perspectives licence file is missing the functionality which relates to those two tasks will be either not on the menu / ribbon at all, or will be ghosted out so that it can't be accessed.

Great! Thanks, Alan.

So, the TM1 Client is always there in TM1 10 version? Although I didn't see its description in the manual.

I can't believe how badly IBM has documented this.

Oh wait, it's IBM, I can believe how badly IBM has documented this. :roll:

You will find both Client and Perspectives referred to in this part of the User Guide. It makes no mention of the distinction between Perspectives and Client. It makes no mention of the licence file. It makes no mention of how you go from Perspectives to Client and back, but by the gods if you allow more users to have Perspectives than your licence allows you can bet that they'd roll the wrath of Thor down on your head the next time they do an audit at your site.

The nearest I've been able to find to date that relates to this in 10.1 (though I'll admit that my search was far from exhaustive) is this. Technically it's about Architect, but Architect is in the same boat as Perspectives/Client; that is, there are two different incarnations of it which are actually from the same executable file. The question of which functionality is available depends on the presence or absence of the tm1p8.lic file, which is the same file that determines whether, when you start the tm1p.xla client add-in, you get "Client" or you get "Perspectives". The location of that file is discussed in the article as well.
