Migrating Cognos Express 9.5 to 10.1

Post by hardstep »

Hi All

Has anyone come across any migration issues moving TM1/Xcelerator/ICAS models (and its respective Contributor/Planner Security Rights) from 9.5 to 10.1 ?.
It would appear that when the model is backed up and subsequently restored into v10 - the way that security rights are managed within v10 have changed slightly
thus you have to remove your old security rights and reapply them in the new version ?.
I cannot find any documentation in both the Express documentation or Enterprise documentation for TM1 v10 - where it describes the changes in the security rights assignment
and how models should be migrated between versions.
The only workaround i've found is to blat away the old rights and recreate !.

Any insight on this issue would be gratefully received !.

Cheers
Nick

It seems that main method of restoring contributor objects is to export them to .zip then remove them from current server. Then after upgrade you re import the application from .zip file, in essence recreating all the control objects needed. If you are saying this is still a problem then I can only think of one other option which would be to export the rights to flat file from the contributor security admin screen and then remove all the rights before you export. However, I don't believe this will have much affect as your rights appear to be held in xml format in the .zip file and I don't believe there is a difference between the two versions for this specific rights file.

Thanks !...the standard way to migrate content between different versions of Cognos Express is to use the backup/restore functionality.
This ensures that all content (ICAS data objects, Report content, Security, Data Source connections, FM packages etc) are all captured...this is the documented approach to moving content between servers.

Whilst i'm happy to export and import individual config files (xml or otherwise) - what I find more worrying is that they have changed the security model between versions and the only way to get my planner application
back online is to recreate the security model from scratch or from an export/import (thus leaving the backup/restore pretty much redundant).

The other worrying fact is that change in security is not documented in any way between versions !.
I'm sure the change is for the better - but it would have been nice to be warned that a rebuild was required !.
