TM1 book and release of TM1 10

Post by bergstrand »

Hi,

I found something interesting on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/IBM-Cognos-TM1-Of ... 0071765697.

From the description: Based on the newest release, TM1 10, this official guide offers an advanced tutorial for TM1 concepts from a technical and a business point of view. The release date is stated as October 22, 2011. McGrawHill's webpage says: Written by members of the TM1 team and timed with the release of TM1 10.

Conclusion 1: The release of TM1 10 should, if the information above is correct, take place in October 2011.

Conclusion 2: There is an official book on TM1 on the way.

Very interesting. Looking at the authors Chris Ilacqua and Jochen Grünes have been around since Applix days and should know what they are talking about. Those with unofficial TM1 guides in the pipelines had better get their skates on.

Interesting the date coincides with IBM IOD in Vegas!

Offers deep insights into the most powerful and undocumented capabilities of TM1
Why are the most powerful capabilities of TM1 undocumented? Is this a new strategy where the bundled documentation isn't enough anymore and you have to shell out more in order to use the system properly?

Generally I think IBM ownership of TM1 has been a great thing for the product, but one thing that annoys me is how much and how often you have to pay in order to gain knowledge in the product, even as a partner. In Applix days everyone was just keen on getting as many people using the tool as possible.

Apart from that moan it is good to see that some guys who really know what they are talking about are sharing their knowledge. It'll be interesting to see how much of it is applicable to the real world.
Please do not send technical questions via private message or email. Post them in the forum where you'll probably get a faster reply, and everyone can benefit from the answers.

Don't get me started. {Glares at the API documentation, with special emphasis on the .Net one.}

Though I'd have to say that most of TM1's functionality is well documented, certainly to a far better extent than (say) recent releases of Office have been. (Thinks wistfully of The Olden Days when you'd get thick bound volumes which would walk you through the functionality.) There are gaps, but from my contact with Cognos staff there does seem to be an interest in addressing those.

I think in this case though that this is the standard approach of textbook writers; "We Reveal The Hidden Secrets That Only We Know!" Rather like a web site that I once saw which revealed Excel's "secrets"; the sample lesson of which offered to reveal {spooky music} conditional formatting.

Can't see it happening. We (as in the Admins) discussed this idea a couple of years back but the economics just didn't work in a market that's TM1's size. I speculated that the only way that it would fly would be if it was done as a "loss leader" with Iboglix support - essentially, a book which is more intended to promote the product than to sell in its own right - which is indeed what seems to have happened here. The only other way that it might happen is via an e-book, bypassing printing costs and (most) distributor margins... but this ain't J. K Rowling's work we're talking about here and (again given the potential market size) the investment in time is unlikely to be compensated by a corresponding reward in sales.

Note that the McGraw Hill web site now gives the release date as March 2012 but still "timed with the release of TM1 10".

If the Official TM1 book is anything like the "Official Cognos BI 8" book I spent £54.88 of my hard earned cash on, then the publication delay is likely caused by Snagit repeatedly crashing leaving them unable to update their mega-cut-and-paste "how to without any why" word doc.

I hope its something more than this but knowing IBM it will be as much an attempt to cash in on a phenomenon as Bunty's 1973 Bay City Rollers Annual.

As far as I am aware TM1 10 is still in beta and not ready for release so a release at IOD is defo looking doubtful and may explain why the book has been delayed. This is onlu a guess mind.

Have there been any details about TM1 10? Has IBM even mentioned the release of TM1 10 other than the planned release of the TM1 book?

I'm only asking because a quick google search did not return much about TM1 10's release. It would be good to know what new features this release has to make it TM1 10 and not TM1 9.5.3? What (if any) are the new hardware requirements to run TM1 10 etc.

If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

Regards,
Magnus

As jimwood suggests if TM1 10 is in beta then it is very unlikely that IBM would release any information about potential features, performance etc. These will be being tested and evaluated throughout the beta and IBM won't want to be bound by public commitments to release certain features if they can't get them ready for the next release.

wrt TM1 10, I look forward to a lot more integration between the Cognos products and TM1 and hopefully some improvements on the administration side, particularly managing user bases across multiple instances of TM1.

Well, October 22 has come and gone... and it looks like someone is trying to beat out the "official" book with a their own book (which hasn't been released either) based on the certification course:

Amazon now says 22 Nov.

I overheard at a PALO conference that IBM have delayed the release of TM1 10.1 to March 2012.

No Jim, you can buy three! Though if you get the ebook version you may need to find a way of burning electrons. Li'l Packt Publishing seems to be taking quite an interest in TM1 though again this is a future release. (December, in this case.)

I did download the ebook version of the packtpub book today and starting to review. Looks pretty good for us newbie types. Noticed that Wim Gielis was a reviewer. If anyone has questions about book let me know and I will answer to the best of my ability.

Hello,

That's correct, I reviewed the book.
The publisher agreed to send me the final version print copy - could be quite different from the initial text I reviewed and my comments.
I hope the typo's were corrected :-)
From a TM1 perspective, it's a good read but not too advanced.

Wim
