IncSight Engine

Post by TomBr »

Hi,

Does anyone have experience of dealing with IncSight Engine ?

In particular, if my client upgrades from TM1 v8.4.2 to v9.1 should it still work as before ? I understand the version of IncSightEngine being used is v2.3.5 and it is mainly used for reporting purposes.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

Wow that's a blast from the past

We used it with a client back in 1997 and I recall them asking a similar question not long ago. ISTR that the answer was No but I can't be sure.

It was one of those tools that Applix sold for a month or two to plug gaps they didn't feel like filling and then dropped unceremoniously.

It was actual pretty good at report generating and dimension building if I recall though (obviously) not as fast as TI.

Like most of these tools it looked like it had been written by someone who had been somewhere near an end user, so Applix really had no excuse for that lame report generator they gave us, having had at least two perfectly user friendly tools in their own sales kit before they released it to measure their own offering against.

I'd be interested to know what became of it.

I believe this was written by Charles Kyd. It had a lot of neat little tools and utilities such as being able to parse a formula and convert all TM1 formulas to values. However, unlike alot of the other functions that I've seen posted I believe it relied on VBA and not the TM1 API to perform this. If that's the case and provided that these functions haven't changed I would think it should still work.

I can't remember the address, but I know that he had a website (practice) which was more geared to the overall use of Excel and not just TM1. He could still be around although I think it was 1998 the last time I heard of him at a TM1 conference.

Try finding him at: http://www.exceluser.com

I think he's less aligned with TM1 now (some references to PowerOLAP on that website), but may be able to provide some guidance on his old IncSight Engine (whose old website seems to be on the fritz or dead: http://www.incsight.com/) and whether it is coded in a way that probably will/won't work with 9.1.

Even if he had used the TM1 API, that should continue to work in TM1 9.1 since the API hasn't really changed in 9.1. But, I suppose it is possible that changes in the TM1 Excel client's events/methods could cause problems if he was using anything undocumented (which I doubt he was).

Hope that helps. Haven't seen Charlie in ages but he clearly still loves his Microsoft Excel.

I use Charlie's ideas for dashboarding in excel in conjunction with TM1 all the time. Although he references PowerOLAP, his ideas are easily transferable. I like using his ideas when I present something in excel.

Thanks for all the useful replies on this.

Managed to make contact with Charlie Kyd who said it should work with v9 and initial testing confirms this.

IncSight Engine 3.0 /Excel 2007

Post by CiskoWalt »

Hello,

1. Does IncSight Engine 3.0 work with Excel 2007 ?
2. Does IncSight Engine 3.0 work with TM1 version 9.5?
3. Is There a newer product I can purchase that converts DBR formula to values?

I invoke this add-in with the following short-cut:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\EXCEL.EXE" "C:\Program Files\Cognos\TM1\bin\tm1p.xla" "C:\Program Files\IncSight30\Engine.xla"

The IncSight tools appear under the Excel 2007 menu named 'Add-ins' Unfortunately, when I click on any of the IncSight buttons, I am prompted to 'Please Open the TM1 Add-in'

I know the TM1 Add-in is already open, otherwise I would not see the TM1 menu option.

Charles Kyd has developed a new product and is calling it IncSight; but the new product does not have the same functonality.

Thanks,

Walt

Hi Walt,

In answer to question three, take a look at the admin team's open source add-in. It removes DBR formulae plus has a few other useful features.

Can't help you with the other two questions, that tool is before my time...
