Has anyone Connected Tm1 to BW without Connector

Post by danielpeeroo »

Hi All

I am just wondering whether anyone has been able to connect Tm1 to SAP BW without the Tm1 SAP (BW) Connector? I have been able to get into the R3 tables before but its like a maze in there and the data we need happens to be nicely available in BW (for once!!)!

I know there are loads of other tools available that can do this but surely it is possible to do this without added investment and cost - sure it might not be as good or as easy but once we get the connection we can use TI to do whatever we need.

Any suggestions and help would be welcome

Thanks

Daniel

I asked the same thing about querying a SAP system without using the API on a non TM1 related query. I was told the raw tables were just impossible to figure. The best route we could come up with was to use SAP's own data dumping process as part of our download job and then pop the data in from the .csv generated I am afraid.

I think I have mentioned this before but there we go:

All the table names are german. If you can speak this language you may be in luck. Also be aware that it tends to keep more sensative data (Salary information etc....) fragmented which SAP puts together using views. (Which are not visable when looking at the database.)

Not that I'm holding myself out as a SAP expert (oh no) but SAP BW isn't SAP. BW is an ODBO server so it _should_ be possible to link to it using (say) ADOMD. SAP R/3 is an app which holds data in (as Jim says) deliberately nasty tables with obfuscated names. Mind you, I've been waiting for someone to let me loose on a SAP tablespace with a user nearby who can run enquiries to validate what I find. Don't think German names would defeat me :)

After 11+ years of working with and extracting data from SAP R3 it's actually quite easy. Most of the tables (apart from payroll info) are easily accessible and the German names are no hinderance, just another name.

We have about 90-100 table extracts that run nightly (or more frequently) to update our TM1 dataset which include all the main data you'd expect.

SAP APO (SCM) with it's BW database though ... we haven't cracked that yet, though we are looking into it again.

Thanks everyone for your input

We are just looking at various options so its encouraging to know there are poeple out there who have got this working before via various methods.

I will keep you posted of our progress when we revisit this in the coming weeks.

Thanks Again
