Cognos Express 9.0 Migration to 9.5
Hi there,
Recently we are looking at migrating Cognos Express 9.0 to 9.5. Has anyone done this before? Can share with me your migration experience? How long do you for the migration project? Templates and TI process, any changes required?
Btw, anyone has any idea when will Cognos Express 9.0 come to end of support?
Regards
Beek

Re: Cognos Express 9.0 Migration to 9.5
Did you ask your IBM Cognos Business Partner from whom you purchased CX 9.0 ?beek wrote:Btw, anyone has any idea when will Cognos Express 9.0 come to end of support?
According to the IBM Support Lifecylce page ->
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/support/lifecycle/
Support Lifecycle
CX 9.0 (a) has been released 09/15/2009 and (b) has an Enhanced Lifecycle Policy. According to the IBM Software Support Lifecycle Policy page ->
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/support/ ... olicy.html
IBM Software Support
IBM Software Support Lifecycle Policy
an Enhanced Lifecycle Policy translates to, quote,
‘5+3’ Support – a minimum of five full years of standard support from the date the product release was made generally available by IBM, with the option to get support extensions for at least an additional three years following a product’s EOS date for an extra charge set by IBM.
Thus Standard Support for CX 9.0 will end 09/15/2014 by which time it will be completely obsolete as it's TM1 component aka CX 9.0 Xcelerator is based on TM1 9.4.1

How to migrate from CX 9.0 to 9.5 is outlined in the manual Managing IBM Cognos Express 9.5.0 ->beek wrote:Recently we are looking at migrating Cognos Express 9.0 to 9.5. Has anyone done this before? Migrating your Express content
You can move your IBM Cognos Express content from one Express environment to another. This saves you from having to replace cubes, recreate data source definitions, or define configuration settings.

Re: Cognos Express 9.0 Migration to 9.5
I have done the migration a couple of times and it is fairly easy.
Remember to move cx20101024_143754 folder out from the current location to somewhere safe. Once you uninstall cognos express, everything in the cognos express folder will be gone.

Thanks for replies.
Hi moby91,
Yes, I had checked with the vendor. I was told that the equivalent version TM1 9.4 will come to end of support by 2012 Sept (which is very soon). For Cognos Express 9.0, so far, there's no news about it yet. If it is estimated to be in 2014, then I would have more time
Hi WinsonLee,
You mean I should put the original cx20101024_143754 back to where it was after I uninstall 9.0, and install 9.5 ? What does this folder contain? My users groups settings?
Regards
Beek

Re: Cognos Express 9.0 Migration to 9.5
Cognos express is using TM1 9.5.1/IBM Cognos Analytic Server. It is still two version behind the current TM1 latest version. Current one is at 10.1 and prior to that is 9.5.2.beek wrote:Thanks for replies.

Once you finish your backup, you will have similar folder (C:\Program Files\IBM\Cognos Express\data\express_backups\cx20101024_143754) mention on the link provided by moby91 . Move the folder to another location. Once you uninstall, everything under C:\Program Files\IBM\Cognos Express\ will be removed. Once you install Cognos Express 9.5, you can move back cx20101024_143754 folder to C:\Program Files\IBM\Cognos Express Backups\. After that restoring the data is pretty straight forward. go to "IBM Cognos Express Manager" and you should see "Backup & restore" on the left panel.

Wouldn't it be better to wait for Cognos Express 10?
Hopefully not too far away.

Re: Cognos Express 9.0 Migration to 9.5
Hi,
Now that CE 10 is already out, maybe I should change the subject to 9.0 to 10.1 (or 10.2) . As Ms Office 2003 is coming end of support soon, I'm tasked to upgrade the Cognos Express 9.0 (to which ever newer version which can work with Ms Office 2010)
I'm trying to research on the CE10. I saw the other post with http://www.tm1forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8328. It seem CE10 is giving some problem ? Is it still not so stable ? Compared to older versions?
Any CE10 user here? So far, any CE10 issue that is still bugging you? I'm thinking of doing the upgrade only after CE10 is more stabilised...

Re: Cognos Express 9.0 Migration to 9.5
I think with the Fix pack CE 10 is stable.
We wouldn't put in 9.0 as advisor had issues.
We didn't go with 9.5 due to a number of bugs we found in QA so 10 with FP one has been the only version signed off by the users.

Re: Cognos Express 9.0 Migration to 9.5
For Xcelerator objects (aka TM1 objects), the migration is pretty straight forward as it's a copy, restart and all done.
The tricky part will be Cognos Express Content database. It will have to be backed up from current 9.x version and restored on the 10.x version.
Having said that, there is a OPEN APAR on IBM support site on some problem with the restoration. Not sure this is a bug or user error though.

Re: Cognos Express 9.0 Migration to 9.5
Thank you James for your comments. Feel relieved to hear CE10 is stable. Kang, thanks for the advise. Will take note of that when I test out the migration later.
