IBM License Metric Tool?

Post by macsir »

Hi, all
We are experiencing IBM audit and Partner recommended to install this tool going forward. Could anyone share any idea about this tool? Is it easy to install? Thanks.
In TM1,the answer is always yes though sometimes with a but....

from his memory came across once. The installation consists of ~ 42 steps. In principle, everything is not difficult but depends on your infrastructure.

If you need it or not depends on your licence so your partner should be able to tell you exactly if you need it or not. I would have thought that if you needed it and the audit is already underway then your going to have a potentially expensive problem.

Broadly you need ILMT if you are running TM1 on a VM and your licence has a PVU limit.

If you don't have ILMT then you could be billed for all the PVUs on the box the VM is running in.

The install is challenging for a non-specialist in this area and I would recommend finding some money and using a specialist to do the install.

Mac,

I've literally just done it. The best thing for me was the series of videos on you tube. It's on the IBM channel. Find the play list and follow them. Some bits have moved away from the videos but what you need to do instead is covered in the video comments,

Jim.

PS. I would include the link but I don't have access to you tube on my client machine.

Another question, is Planning Analytics Workspace PVU-based? I think it isn't. Therefore ILMT doesn't need to monitor that server. Am I right? Thanks.

Hi, it depends on the licence you have, the best is to check with IBM or your re-seller / VAR.

Broadly
Enterprise is PVU based, Express is not.

Don't make assumptions though, check and be sure as it can be costly if you get audited.

[EDIT]Realised Macsir was talking about PAW not TM1...PAW is not licensed by PVU that I am aware so no ILMT required.

Happened on this link to the License Metric Tool 9.2.0 product page - may be useful.

And from the Quick Start Guide, see ILMT on YouTube, the Wiki and the discussion forum.

It detects all of your installs as long as the Big Fix client and masthead are installed on the PAW machine. Once you've mapped all the installs it'll do the PVU count for you. I would do that rather than assume. Also before the mapping, make sure you have the latest IBM catalog installed on the Big Fix server, it needs that for the correct PVU calculation,

Some of it is useful, some not so much. The problem I found is the tool isn't very intuitive so you really have to try and figure and it out as you go, step by step,

I am gearing up psychologically for this as I have a virtualization and migration project with 5 servers at a client coming up soon. Sounds like heaps of fun!
Will probably keep notes as I go, for my own sanity, and share once successful.

Keep in mind these things:

1) You're installing Big Fix, not ILMT. ILMT is part of the Big Fix framework (This on it's own confused me for a while)
2) Follow the YouTube video I mentioned. Apart from one step that is out of date (covered in the comments of the video) I found it to be the best resource for the installation
3) Once the server is installed it creates a client folder. In there you'll find everything you need to do client installs. Just drop the exe & masthead files on each machine. You could try the deployment option from the server but for us it didn't work. The masthead is the key file as it tells the client install how to connect to the server
4) Once you're in the web interface make sure your install and IBM catalogues are up to date. One covers what you're licensed for and the other maps for the PVU calc.
5) Map all your installs
6) Make sure you connect the VM scanner to the host machine so any VMs can be detected. If not the client will report the full resources of the VM host
7) Complete regular manual scans initially before scheduling anything
8) Set your schedules to run at least once a week, that way you'll never be out of date when IBM come calling
9) You won't get much install support from IBM. They want you to buy their consulting services for this
10) If you encounter an issue, do raise a ticket, the actual ILMT support guys are really good, you just can't get to them without a ticket

I hope all that helps. I did create notes but they are for the client and are very specific to their environment so I'm not in a positions to share them unfortunately,

Thanks for all the pointers Jim - a good overview to start from!

I like point 9 - setting you up for failure so they can beat you at audit time when you are not compliant. Crazy that you have to pay for services to install their auditing tool.

Thanks, Jim for sharing lots of useful info. Yes, you might be right. Better to install it rather than skipping it for PAW. I also found the client installation steps for RHEL from the link you shared. :D

Hi All,
One thing I'm curious about is... I thought that IBM sold big fix to HCL so why would they still be using it for their licensing scanning? Can someone tell me if ILMT still required for TM1?

Thanks,
Paul.

Guys,

Keep in mind that ILMT is a Big Fix extension that uses Big Fix to run it's jobs. Big Fix was built as a container platform so as long as the 2 companies continue to get on I can't see why they coexist,
