Can you post the MDX expression you are using. You can use dynamic subsets in Performance Modeler. If you click on a subset in the tree and look at the properties there is an expression property. Validated member in a link is as you said because it needs to have a picklist on it. I can't see why this is failing because you seem to have done everything right. I was able to recreate the error but only by creating a link and then going back to the dimension and removing the picklist from the me...

I think the likely reason is that Performance Modeler is attempting to upgrade itself and failing.
If you have an existing copy of Performance Modeler for that user remove it using add/remove programs.
Then try again, you'll be starting from a clean place.
