PAW on Linux better performance?
Hi, I am thinking to create Planning Analytics Workspace server on Linux Platform as I heard that there would be a considerable performance boost.
Is that right?
And I had a quick look at the IBM installation document. It looks like quite straightforward and is Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 the best candidate for it so far?
Also, seems that Planning Analytics Local is now supported on Windows Server 2019. Has anyone tried that? If I use Windows for PA local, will that cause any issue with communication of PAW on Linux?
Thanks.

Haven't had a chance to compare performance yet, so a bit off-topic:
Make sure you check licensing implications, as far as I understand, Enterprise Docker on RHEL requires a license. And community docker is not available on RHEL.
being able to use community docker is one of the main reasons next version of PA will support CentOS, afaik.

PAW 2.0.46 supports CentOS see this note.
Besides performance, I am wondering what corporate IT's stance on CentOS will be. All my clients are Windows zealots and will not look at any flavour of Linux. From my past experiences loading onto Linux, about 18 months ago, I found Linux to be more snappy. I was running in a VM but a Windows VM with the same resources just seems sluggish by comparison.

Re: PAW on Linux better performance?
PAW Local is not available on Windows 2019 yet.
Once PAW is running I doubt you'll see much performance difference for Windows 2016 vs. Linux.
Linux, though, is definitely quicker to start and also generally more stable. There also tends to be less chance of AV software mucking things up.
We now support the following on Linux:
RHEL 7 + Docker EE (requires Docker EE subscription)
RHEL 7 + docker (docker comes with RHEL subscription -- it is a forked version of Docker maintained by RedHat and will not run Swarm)
Centos + Docker CE
You can mix & match Windows & Linux no issues.

Re: PAW on Linux better performance?
Thanks, guys, for much info.
Yes, Docker EE license is definitely one point I need to consider if going that way although annual subscription fee is not very expensive.
CentOS is another good way to go. As PAW is the main interface for users and developers, if Linux can provide less sluggish performance than Windows, I think it is worthwhile to try it.

Re: PAW on Linux better performance?
Does that mean I don't need to buy docker EE separately and install PAW directly onto RHEL 7? Is there is any difference regarding functionality and performance compared to docker EE? Thanks.RHEL 7 + docker (docker comes with RHEL subscription -- it is a forked version of Docker maintained by RedHat and will not run Swarm)

Re: PAW on Linux better performance?
You can use the 'docker' package included with the RHEL 7 subscription. No difference compared to Docker EE for PAW Local.

Re: PAW on Linux better performance?
Just make sure you stay on RHEL 7, RHEL 8 doesn't support the free docker anymore.
(RHEL 8 is not supported by PA, though the supported software page did briefly state that it was. )

Re: PAW on Linux better performance?
Thanks. I successfully installed PA & CA onto win 2019 and works perfectly. Waiting my RHEL 7 to come.(RHEL 8 is not supported by PA, though the supported software page did briefly state that it was. )
