Change file extension to XLSX instead of XLS for slices

Post by Arnaud Pecheux »

Dear,

We are now working with TM1 9.5.2 in combination with Office 2010 but could notice that the slices/snapshots/active forms extensions are still XLS.

Is there a way to change TM1 settings in order to get xlsx extensions?

Thanks,

Arnaud.

My guess would be that this is set to be backwards compatibal wih different versions of excel. I'm not sure if it can be switche off but you porduce .xls files from office 2010.

From what I have been told by IBM Jim's answer is right now. As long as 2003 is a supported environment this is not an option. If anyone knows differently I would love to be wrong.

On a side note it is somewhat of a pain since I have had to constantly field questions on the 256 column limit the should theoretically go away if the export were in the new format. It would be nice if IBM would trust the admin to know their environment, but I can understand the need for compatibility.

Was a bit surprised by your post because I have never noticed this in any combination of 9.4/2007 or 9.5.2/2007 or 2010. And I just tried that with 9.5.2 and Office 2010 and I don't see why should not be able to save the file with the xlsx extension. Works for me.

Yes, I guess clarification on exactly where, what cannot be saved would be helpful.

Thanks a lot for all of your answers.

Here are my answers/comments to some of your questions:
Remark from Gregor Koch » Wed Jan 25, 2012 5:41 am:"I don't see why should not be able to save the file with the xlsx extension. Works for me."
The same is valid for me too. The only issue is that it is not possible to have a slice directly in XLSX (or XLSB) format. I always need to get my slice in XLS and then save this as XLSX. But based on the compatibility need explained by George on the 24th of Jan, this now makes sense.

Question from jim wood » Wed Jan 25, 2012 1:41 pm: "Are you using office 2010 on the desktop with a lower version being used by TM1 web???"
We are indeed using a lower version of Excel for TM1 web but this is Excel 2007 (with the new file extensions already available).

Thanks again for you help.

TM1 has a built in excel service. I'n guessing it behaves based on the version of Excel it works with. For 2007 the default file extension that TM1 uses for that version might be xls. I would look at upgrading the version on the server to see if teh problem still persists. Remember compatability for office 2010 is very new to TM1.

I might be wrong but it's one thing eliminated if the problem persists.

Hi
Have you checked the following option in XL 2010?

File - Options - Save - Save Files in this format

What is it set to? What is it if you have the TM1 add-in disabled? Is it changed if you load the add-in?

Hello Gregor,

The file format is already set up to XLSX. This is therefore not the cause of the issue.

I think that, for now, I will stick to the XLS extension and wait for news from Cognos.

Arnaud.
