Post by David Usherwood »

...is now out.
More detailed announcements will follow, but if you think TM1 10.1 but cheaper, you won't be far off.

Just downloaded and unpacked it. About to pop it onto a dev server to see what it looks like. Size of download is pretty big though.

CE 9.0.0 - 1.38GB
CE 9.5.0 - 2.41GB
CE 10.1 - 6.23GB

Groan..... Not what I was led to believe. So, another couple of hours to be wasted reading through legal definitions written by people with no understanding of reality! From the link to things users can't do ( I think this explicit listing is new to 10.1) it seems only Planners can create objects with Performance Modeler, but most users can create ICAS\TM1 objects with Architect. Lucky them.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a simple product with easily understandable user roles, eg , Developer, read\write and reporter. Easy to buy and easy to install.

Another one is that anyone receiving a custom burst needs a reporting licence or consumer license.

http://www-03.ibm.com/software/sla/slad ... FF00372478

"Each person who has a personalized report output created for them by the IBM Cognos Express Administrator or IBM Cognos Express Reporter User must be covered by an Authorized User entitlement."

"Report bursting is a method of producing a set of reports containing personalized content that is based on a common report definition."

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocente ... rstng.html

So, if you are bursting a report, it is considered to be personalised the recipient must be licenced.

This is not great at all.

I know this is drifting a bit from the topic of CX, but I've been advised that under our existing legacy Applix client licencing apparently we aren't even permitted to use Contributor or Performance Modeler without upgrading to Contributor licences, which would then give us Applications (nee Contributor), Cognos Insight, and PM. Those who know my views on PM will know that the latter is not causing me to rush to the company chequebook but the others may matter in the future.

Well, there is... it's just not TM1.

http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/en/u ... nsing.aspx

Mmm, a 6 page .pdf, what you get, for how many dollars, all spelled out in straightforward, easy to follow language with the lowest amount of marketing-speak BS I've seen in any comparable document outside of maybe TechSmith[1]. I do so love SQL Server...

---------------
[1] TechSmith, makers of certain very fine niche market software such as Snagit, is too small to have a proper marketing department. Or if it does, it's one that doesn't hold sway over the business strategy. From a customer point of view, this is very much to our advantage as it means that their web sites and product information gets to the frapping point without all of the meaningless technobabble and dross that you need to wade through to find out what a product actually does on certain other corporate web sites. This of course helps the supplier too since more than once I've looked at their products, thought "Oh, that's cool, I want that!" and since I understood exactly what the product did and exactly how much it cost, bought it on the spot. It helps that they don't change the names of the software components with each release as well.
"To them, equipment failure is terrifying. To me, it’s 'Tuesday.' "

apart form having the limitation of the 100 licenses for Cognos express 10.1, what other major difference there is between Cognos BI 10.1 + cognos tm1 10.1 ?
i have been testing it and it seems like CE 10.1 has all the new features eg Cognos Insight, Cognos Business Insight and cognos business insight advanced which is found on the Cognos BI 10.1 and Cognos Tm1 10.1.
earlier i would thought that there would be some changes on the Rules Editor and TI editor but it is still the same as CE 9.5. Has the rules editor changed on the TM1 10.1 ?

I don't think there are any differences with Cognos BI and Cognos Express.

Has anyone had issues installing Congos Express Xcelerator Client?
I keep getting the error:

I have tried most of the steps listed here with no luck:

Good idea!

But actually just rebuilt my laptop and the server from starch so both have no previous TM1 installs.

I'm thinking virus checker which a enterprise wide so a bit of an issue or a corrupt installer package.. neither are very good options.

CX (as a product that you can buy rather than trials or partner versions) is a 64-bit Windows product only.
All CX components must run on the same hardware server with a maximum of 32 cores.
The integration of the various components relies on there being a single TM1/ICAS/Xcelerator server called CXMD.
CX is not licensed to use BI or another CX instance as a datasource, being limited to text and ODBC sources.
Given that CX instances are not allowed to talk to each other, there is no Replication.
CX Reporter is a limited set of the various Studios that are available for the full BI suite, so no Analysis Studio, no Event Studio, no Metrics Studio.
