PVU (all you can eat) TM1 Licensing?

I'm being told that although Cognos has historically offered PVU (Processor Value Licensing) on Cognos BI, they (since the Applix accquisition) have never offered PVU as a licensing option for TM1.

Can anyone confirm this?

Thx.

The IBM sales rep for the company I've just been at was always trying to upsell us to a "site wide licence" for TM1, which sounds like what you're after - allowing unlimited clients to connect. That was in the UK, but I'm fairly sure it's available world wide.

Strangely I had the oposite experience where we were told by our rep that they intended on sticking with per user based licensing for production. I dont know if that has changed recently, but we could not find anyone that even wanted to mention a "Enterprise" type of license no matter who we asked. :?

So it sounds like what I was told is true... PVU pricing hasn't historically been offered.

I too have been told that IBM would be open to a site license TM1 arrangement.

I've also heard annecdotally that the Cognos BI PVU pricing is really no bargain compared with seats.

I think we had about 500 seats and going site wide was a big step up in price, so you may find the same.

I am a little confused to the TM1 licenses. Do you need to buy the PVU server license and additional licenses for users. The quote we got from our IBM rep listed it as such. The cost came out to around $300,000 for 150 users.

I think you may be confusing an enterprise license with pricing based on processor power (PVU = Processor Value Unit). Current pricing TM1 pricing for standard installs is based on server plus named users. In the case of Entreprise TM1 the server price is calculated on the PVU basis, for Cognos Express is is a fixed amount. For larger companies you can then start talking about Enterprise licensing which may give you more flexibility, but starting at a higher cost. You amy also find issues where Ibm\Cognos sales reps dont really understand the TM1 model.

To be fair, the pricing has changed so frequently over the last 3 years that it is not easy to keep abreast with the current situation. Remember that, even before the Cognos takeover, Applix was trying to introduce named user licensing!
